Several other accidents over weekend in Basin

COULEE CITY — A 24-year-old Warden man died in a one vehicle accident Saturday morning about nine miles north of here.

Manuel Garcia Penaflor was traveling southbound on Highway 17 at about 5:40 a.m. when he crossed into the northbound lane and rolled, the Washington State Patrol reported.

He was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Garcia's 1993 Oldsmobile Achieva was totaled.

Investigators determined excessive speed was a factor in the accident.

On Thursday, a Moses Lake man crashed his vehicle into a fence near the intersection of Road K NE and Road 7 NE, about three miles northeast of Moses Lake.

Thomas D. Redwine, 22, was apparently headed eastbound on Road 7 NE approaching K NE, attempted a right hand turn, didn't reduce speed and went into an opposing lane of traffic. Redwine overcorrected and went off the west side shoulder of Road K NE and ran headlong into a fence, the Grant County Sheriff's Office reported.

Both the vehicle and fence were damaged in the collision. Damage estimates placed the loss at $2000 for the vehicle and $300 for the fence.

Redwine was wearing his seat belt and was not injured in the accident. He was cited for second-degree negligent driving and for having no proof of vehicle insurance.

The WSP responded to a car fire on Friday at milepost 7 on east Highway 28. Jerome A. Howe, 53 of East Wenatchee, was not injured when his 1975 Ford box van caught fire. The vehicle began smoking and Howe pulled to the side of the road before the fire started, the WSP reported.

Three people were transported to the Othello hospital Saturday following a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Reynolds Road and Highway 26, according to the WSP. A 1996 Ford Taurus driven by a 17-year-old Othello boy collided with a 2005 Chrysler Sebring driven by Maribel Valdez Ozuna, 21 of Othello, at about 2:50 p.m. Both drivers and Jennifer M. Gomez, 22 of Othello, a passenger in the Sebring, were transported to the hospital for injuries.

Also on Saturday, a 1988 Cadillac DeVille rolled after driver Charles H. Jackson, 59 of Moses Lake, overcorrected at about milepost 151 on Interstate 90 near George at 4:25 p.m. Jackson will be charged for having his vehicle's wheels off the roadway, the WSP reported. He was transferred to the Quincy hospital for head, neck and back injuries.
