MOSES LAKE — Volunteers from Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church have joined in the effort to provide relief to victims of Hurricane Katrina, and sent much-needed supplies on a 2,600-mile journey Monday to a twin church in Slidell, La.

The church and Knights of Columbus Council 4367 have been collecting office, school and kitchen supplies for Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and school in Slidell. Since February, volunteers have amassed approximately 4,000 pounds of supplies to help replace those wiped out when Hurricane Katrina ravaged the region last year.

Volunteer George Massart said the church's office lost everything, and volunteers are trying to provide anything from computer monitors to printing paper to aid the needs of the parish. Massart and Marion Agbisit said donation responses have been terrific from the church, and they also saw a great number of donations from different organizations in the community.

Massart, Agbisit and Lyle Sainsbury from Oak Harbor Freight Lines loaded the supplies up from the church Monday, and they are expected to reach Our Lady of Lourdes early next week. This will be the third load of supplies Oak Harbor has taken to the Southeast for Katrina relief from Grant County, and the company is providing its freight services free of charge.
