Dorothy Irene Scott Gilbertson-Hubbell (Dottie)

| May 5, 2006 9:00 PM

Dorothy Irene Scott Gilbertson-Hubbell (Dottie) passed from us, peacefully, after a brief battle with cancer. She was a loving and giving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend to those of us blessed to be a part of her joyful spirit. Dottie exemplified the value of service to others in a quiet unassuming way. She supported others with her encouragement and actions helping us through the good times and the bad.

Dottie was born in Oak Harbor to Olaf Peter and Marie Lobben Scott. She was the youngest of eight children and graduated from high school there. Dottie met her husband, Thorne Gilbertson-Hubbell in Oak Harbor. They married in 1940 and Dottie lived in Seattle for a time and then moved to Bellingham where their daughter, Joan was born. Work took the young family to Port Orchard and eventually they moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, where they raised their daughter and enjoyed water-skiing and gardening in the summer and snow machine riding in the winter.

An active and enthusiastic woman, Dottie cooked for the "army" of young people who joined them at their cabin at Harding Lake in Alaska, supervised countless 4-H and Girl Scout groups, and listened and critiqued endless hours of piano and dance practice. Her passions in life were collecting all manner of things depicting birds, reading, traveling, cooking and cookbooks (which she read like novels), and gardening.

After her retirement from the Municipal Utilities System in Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1982, Dottie and her companion, J.C. Bewley moved to California, with Dottie choosing to move to Moses Lake several years later to be close to her family. She was very active with her Bridge Club, Eastern Star, Electa Circle and Garden Club activities. Dottie enjoyed life, her family and her friends. Those she knew will miss her dearly.

Dottie was preceded in death by her husband, Thorne, siblings; Walter, Ralph, and Peter, in-laws Stella, Charlotte, Harvey and niece and nephew: Lois and Scott.

Her daughter, Joan Adams, granddaughter, Elzbeth Adams, and great-granddaughter, Marina of Alaska survives Dorothy. She is also survived by brother George Scott; sister Ivy & Wilbur Brotherton III and their children Jerome & Sharon Brotherton and children Katie and Michael; Richard Brotherton and children Noel and Scott; Mary Lou Brotherton and children Hydie and Jason; Wilbur IV & Kris Brotherton; sister Thelma McIntyre and her daughter Pam & Curtis Ott and their children Kelly and Kevin; grand-nieces & nephews; John, Kenny, Kathy Scott, niece in-law Sue Lamb and children Annie & John Brotherton.

Because of Dottie's love for gardening, a rose garden will be established in her name at the Pioneer Memorial Gardens in Moses Lake. Donations may be made to Benson Family Funeral Services for this purpose or you may donate a rose bush. A Celebration of Dottie's life will be held at her home May 14 at 3 p.m. The Benson Family Funeral Home will handle arrangements.

The family would like to give thanks and appreciation to those family and friends who sat, read, called, fed, prayed, sent cards and flowers, gave support and did errands and chores. Thanks also to Central Basin Home Health and Hospice.
