Lady Chiefs keep games close against Walla Walla

MOSES LAKE — The Lady Chiefs hosted Walla Walla Tuesday, keeping games close in the doubleheader but fell behind in both for losses.

After a first inning run from Walla Walla Moses Lake's defense buckled down and did not allow a run for three innings.

Heather Coulter struck out 12 batters in the first seven innings, while the Lady Chiefs' offense struggled.

"Our bats are kinda silent right now," said head coach Alan Coulter.

In the top of the fourth, Moses Lake's defense allowed an RBI single through second to give Walla Walla the 2-0 lead that developed into a victory.

The bottom of the fifth saw some action at second as well — on an attempted steal. Moses Lake's Katie Cram headed toward third before being directed back and on the return trip collided with the Walla Walla second baseman. Both players resumed play after a brief breather.

In game two Walla Walla scored two early runs before Moses Lake got on the board.

Leading off in the bottom of the second, Heather Coulter hit a loop single to left field. Her courtesy runner, Sophie Garza, was tagged out at second on a bunt single from Jayme Albrant.

Alexis Ballinger earned an RBI during her at bat, placing a single to bring in Albrant's courtesy runner, Shalayne Hunter.

Walla Walla scored their final run of the game in the top of the third on a double shot to left field and made the score 3-1.

In the bottom of the seventh the Lady Chiefs worked to rally for a win.

Shayla May lead off for Moses Lake and put a barrel on a pitch straight down the middle before being tagged out at first.

Coulter singled to left before being replaced by courtesy runner Lindsey Rossell who was later replaced by Crystal Mabry.

Rossell was advanced on a line single to second by Albrant. Mabry rounded third on an infield single to short by Cram and sent home by Ballinger who was tagged out at first but earned the RBI.

The Lady Chiefs' rally ended with Ballinger's RBI with Moses Lake falling 3-2.

"The last four games have been close," said Alan Coulter. "It has been something simple to win it."

Moses Lake plays their last home game at 4 p.m. Friday against Pasco. The game will include senior night festivities.
