Moses Lake off to slow start
MOSES LAKE — The Lady Chiefs met the Lady Lions in a double header Wednesday to make up for their rained out game last week and lost both games.
The first game was a defensive grind that included short at bats and good fielding by both squads. Wednesday marked the home crowd's first opportunity to see the team.
Kennewick scored the only run of the game in the top of the third, captializing on two infield errors by the Lady Chiefs, to win 1-0.
"We just committed too many errors," said Moses Lake head coach Alan Coulter. "We'll go out tomorrow and start over."
Crystal Mabry led off the batting for Moses Lake in the first inning but could not connect with the ball.
Katie Cram was the only Lady Chiefs hitter to get on base. She singled with two outs and was left on base after Heather Coulter popped up a hit to end the inning.
In the top of the second Coulter allowed one hit and struck out Kennewick's next two batters to end the at bat in short order.
Moses Lake continued to struggle with Jayme Albrant getting beat to first base by a throw from third and Shawnee Durbin and Jhenesis Garza striking out to end the inning.
The bottom of the third and top of the fourth featured quick trips to the plate by both teams.
Shayla May singled to lead off the batting for the Lady Chiefs in the bottom of the fourth and stole second on Cram's at bat. May took off for third during Coulter's at bat. May was left on when Albrant's hit was fielded and thrown to first for the force out.
In the top of the sixth Garza replaced Coulter on the mound and struck out the final batter to end the inning.
Moses Lake continued to battle in the final inning turning a double play with tags at first and home before returning to the plate.
The Lady Chiefs went down swinging, with Albrandt getting beat to first and Durbin singling to get on base. Moses Lake ended the game striking out two.
Kennewick took the second game 9-2, capitalizing on the Lady Chiefs' six errors.
Mabry had a double in the seventh and was driven in by Chelsea Allsbrook but it was too little too late for Moses Lake.
The Lady Chiefs will be in Richland Friday for the next league match.
