Hugh Si Gatewood "Buddy"

Hugh Si Gatewood "Buddy" 1919-2006 passed away March 13 at Sunbridge Care and Rehab. Bud was born Aug. 29, 1919 in Portland Ore., To the late Hugh and Iva Gatewood. He is survived by the love of his life, Esther at home in Moses Lake; his daughter Linda and son-in-law Barney Paul of Moses Lake. Daughter in-law Ellen Gatewood of North Bend, and five grandchildren; Tom Paul and wife Kelly of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, Denise "Paul" Hottois and husband Steven of Moses Lake, John Gatewood of Virgina, Mary Stocker of Cle Elum. Mike Gatewood of Texas; seven great-grandchildren Arissa, Tyler, Jenna, Elizabeth, Robert, Josh, Kristen; sisters Rosalee and husband Jack Bonds of Culver City, Calif. Kay and husband Dick Bushnell of Merlin, Ore., brother Bart and wife Rozella Gatewood of North Bend, Ore.

Bud grew up in Leland, Ore. where he went to school, times were hard back then and one of his jobs after school was to keep the fire going under the still. Later on in life, he drove dump truck and helped to improve and extend the road into Crater Lake. Then he worked on a job in Cottage Grove, Ore. Where he met Esther Plummer, they married June 21, 1941.

Their first house was two train boxcars put together. March 1942, his son Butch was born. In 1944 he went into the Navy, stationed in New Guinea. May 1945 his daughter Linda was born.

He loved life and family and friends. He and his friends went into logging for themselves, he also drove log truck for Weyerheuser in Cottage Grove, Ore. He joined IBEW in 1965 working 17 years as a low boy driver and equipment operator. He retired in 1981.

He was a Moose Lodge member of Cottage Grove, Ore. He loved hunting, fishing, flying his plane and at one time the family got the race car bug.

He was a good man and loved his family. He was preceded in death by one brother, Bob and his beloved son, Butch.

Arrangements are under the direction of Neptune Society. A celebration of his life will be in the summer in Oregon.
