Seventh annual Bob Skidmore event honors those who prevent drug and alcohol abuse

MOSES LAKE — It isn't every day when someone is moved to action.

The late Bob Skidmore was such a person who, after a drunk driver hit and tragically killed Bob's then 16-year-old son Trent nearly 12 years ago, began a journey to educate others about the effects of drug and alcohol abuse.

What has resulted is an annual event known as the Bob Skidmore Recognition Event that takes place each year in June.

The June 22 date this year will mark the seventh annual recognition from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Best Western Hallmark Inn Sage and Sun Room in Moses Lake.

"A lot of times they go without being recognized and this was something that was really important to Mr. Skidmore," said Marlo Alvarado, administrative assistant with the Grant County Prevention and Recovery Center.

PARC is honoring nine recipients from Grant County at the event with awards for their dedication to prevention work.

Skidmore's son Travis Skidmore has been asked to speak at the ceremony where lunch will be provided.

PARC administrator Jennifer Lane said the event has been well attended and in the past included guest appearances by District 13 legislators.

"He was very passionate about the fact that a lot of people in the community volunteer so much of their valuable time to prevent substance abuse and the devastating impact it can have," Lane said. "Bob Skidmore wanted to change that in at least Grant County and wanted to bring the public's attention to the fact that there were many good deeds occurring."

Bob also is known for his work with victims panels, where victims or their families make a personal testimony to those who have received DUIs or other drug and alcohol abuse charges.

Lane said one of the reasons PARC wants to recognize those who volunteer their time with prevention efforts is because it is not an activity people often notice.

"Prevention is a very hard thing to see or to recognize," Lane said.
