Ephrata ekes out 39-30 victory

EPHRATA - The Tiger's dual meet against Omak was decided by the last bout of the night.

"Overall, I think the kids wrestled pretty tough," said head coach Dave Laird.

Dallas Hintz of Ephrata, wrestling at 140 pounds, took on Jason Caryl with his team up just six points in total scoring.

Hintz struck first, earning a take down before Caryl escaped and scored a take down of his own.

After a short tussle Hintz earned an escape of his own to tie the bout at three.

Both wrestlers went back and forth to try to gain momentum in the second round.

After Hintz deferred, Caryl chose the down position and scored the only point of the period on an escape.

The third period opened with a take down by Hintz.

After getting Caryl on his back, Hintz was able to earn a two-point near fall to seal his victory 7-5.

"We knew it would be a decent match," said Laird. "Caryl is a tough kid."

The 103 bout did not have as much action as the 140 match did, but it did give a lesson on how to defend a lead.

Mitchell Friend of Ephrata matched up against Nik McLaughlin.

In the first round Friend earned a take down. After that initial score, the bout was a chess match to defend those two points.

Friend was able to battle hard, pulling McLaughlin back into the circle throughout the second and third rounds, but could not get any points or a pin out of his effort.

Friend's defense of his take down was enough for a 2-0 victory.

"Mitchell just keeps getting better and better and better," said Laird. "Two months ago that kid would've pinned him."

On senior night, it was appropriate that two seniors would win the opening bouts for Ephrata.

At 152, Zack Brissey took on Brandon Hughes.

Brissey jumped out to a commanding 11-3 lead at the end of the first round and finished off the match by pinning Hughes with 23 seconds left in the second period.

Following Brissey, Gunnar Kallstrom defeated Jerromey Harris at 160 pounds.

Kallstrom earned a 5-0 lead after a take down and 3-point near fall to begin the first round. After a scoreless second round, Kallstrom scored 11 points in the third period for a 16-1 win.
