Video West opens in Broadway complex

MOSES LAKE — If Tod Green had his own "Employee Recommendations" shelf, the recent movie "Mind Hunters" and discs of "The West Wing" would probably be on it.

"I like science fiction and comedies, so if there's a good science fiction or comedy movie, I'm there," he said. "I don't really care for horror … I would probably be more for pulling the TV series, because I like to watch the TV series from beginning to end without any commercials. That's the real reason we carry them, because a lot of people like to do that."

Green and a silent partner opened Video West, at 1029 W. Broadway Ave., located in the same complex as the Washington State Department of Licensing, on Jan. 2.

The store offers DVDs, but no VHS tapes, and Xbox and Playstation 2 games for rent. Green said the operation has plans for other conveniences once things really get up and running "that no other video store has anywhere," but declined to say more, other than, "It's an innovative idea."

Green was born and raised in Wenatchee and, save for some time in Hawaii and Las Vegas, has primarily spent the majority of his life in the area, he said, noting his parents and family have lived in the Moses Lake area for at least 25 years.

"So it's kind of like hometown boy comes home," Green said with a chuckle.

Green owned a store in Las Vegas called DVD Me, which he said was finding success, but decided there was more opportunity in a smaller area. Being from Moses Lake, the town seemed the right choice, Green added.

"I think there is a large need here in the Moses Lake area for another video store," he said, noting that larger chains are present, "but they're all on one end of the town. Nobody's really serving the peninsula or Mae Valley, and I thought there was a need there for that part of the community that doesn't seem to be getting service."

Green added he hopes his business will begin a trend of more businesses locating in that portion of town.

Business has been slow, but more and more people are realizing the business is open, Green said.

The operation is privately owned. There are other Video West operations, Green noted, but they're also privately owned and not part of a chain.

"It just seems that it's a good name," he said.

The operation's permanent hours are yet to be determined. Green said the hours are currently "floating" with the volume of the store and what time customers come in.

"Right at the moment they're from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m.," he said, adding hours on Fridays and Saturdays go until 10 p.m.

Green said he went into the video rental business in order to own his own business.

"We're a small mom and pop store," he said. "We're here to serve the community and give back to the community, not like some of our competition. We are customer-oriented, so if there's a movie we don't have and you can't find it anywhere else, we are more than happy to search the globe and find it for you."
