Vandals flood vacant Kmart

| January 19, 2006 8:00 PM

$50,000 damage reported

MOSES LAKE — The flooding of an unoccupied box store by unknown vandals has reportedly caused extensive water damage to the former Kmart building.

Moses Lake Police are continuing to investigate the incident, after the building was reportedly filled with 8 inches of water following a forced entry Tuesday night.

Preliminary estimates indicate more than $50,000 damage was done to the building at 1020 N. Stratford Road. The store has been vacant since Kmart closed in 2003.

Police reports indicate suspects broke into the building, broke a water pipe and later turned on fire water valves outside the building. The incident was the second time MLPD officers responded to the building this week, and broken windows were reported on the property Monday. Attempts to locate the owner of the building were not successful, according to police reports.

Cleaners with ServiceMaster had collected most of the water by Thursday morning, but planned to continue work on site over the next five days.

Anyone with information on the vandalism is asked to call MLPD Det. Juan Loera at (509)766-9230.
