Pilot uninjured in plane crash near Othello
OTHELLO — The pilot of a Cessna airplane, which crashed before taking off Sunday afternoon, was uninjured in the accident.
Daniel Deboer, a 49-year-old Othello resident, was using Barton Road, located about 10 miles northwest of Othello as a runway for his 1960 Cessna 172A plane when the accident occurred prior to take off. One of the wheels of the plane went into the shoulder of the road and a wing tip struck the dirt embankment, causing the plane to veer off the roadway.
Adams County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the scene shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday; Deboer contacted the sheriff's office about 20 minutes later to report he had not been injured.
Deboer has a private dirt runway near Barton Road, but it was too soft for a take off Sunday, according to the sheriff's office.
Deboer estimated there was about $20,000 damage to the plane, according to a press release issued by the sheriff's office.
The Federal Aviation Administration of Spokane will be investigating the incident.
