Othello wins Spud Classic
Huskies take back trophy after third win in four years
OTHELLO — The Huskies defeated Connell 63-18 in the fourth annual Columbia Basin Spud Classic dual meet Thursday.
"It's nice to see the kids come out and be aggressive," said head coach Ruben Martinez. "I was pleased that the kids went out and attacked, attacked, attacked."
The premiere bout of the meet was in the 145 division where Philip Ontiveros of Othello and Adam Orozco of Connell squared off. It would have been a forfeit win for Othello had Orozco not dropped down to 145 from his usual 152.
"It was a good match for people to see," Martinez said. "They probably won't face each other again."
Orozco scored first with a take down in the first round before time expired.
In the second round, Ontiveros came out fighting, scoring a reversal and a 2-point near fall in the first minute.
Orozco rallied and earned a reversal of his own before Ontiveros scored another reversal to end the period.
Orozco scored a quick escape in the third round before Ontiveros earned another take down to win the match 8-5.
Othello's Derek Stelter won the first bout of the night by forfeit but took on his opponent, Eddie Serra, in an exhibition match in the 112 division.
Stelter overwhelmed Serra scoring a take down and 2-point near fall to begin the bout.
Serra answered with a reversal before Stelter scored a reversal of his own and followed it with a 3-point near fall.
With 12 seconds left in the bout, Stelter pinned Serra for the win.
At 119, Mat Garza of Othello took on Harris Garcia.
Garza scored a quick take down and then Garcia earned an escape. Garza had another take down before the round was over.
Garcia opened the second round with another escape before Garza wrapped him up for a take down. Garcia escaped again and scored a take down with time running out.
In the final seconds of the round Garza earned another take down to go up 8-5.
Garza opened the third round with a reversal and then pinned Garcia at 5:38 for the win.
Jack Calvert of Othello took on Omar Velasquez in the 130 bout.
Calvert fell behind after Velasquez scored a take down and 2-point near fall early on but came back to win the match with a pin at 49.5.
In the 171 division, Charlie Valdez of Othello matched up against Jonathan Lopez.
Valdez took a 4-0 lead in the first round after scoring a take down and 2-point near fall.
The second round opened with Lopez earning two points, one on an illegal hold penalty against Valdez and the other on an escape.
Valdez trapped Lopez and earned another take down before pinning Lopez at 35.2 seconds for the win.
"Charlie did some amazing things in that match for a first year wrestler," said Martinez.
At 189, Edgar Lopez of Othello took on Josh Rankin of Connell.
In the first round, Lopez earned a take down before time expired.
With 58 seconds remaining in the second period, Lopez pinned Rankin for the win.
Othello earned its final win of the night in the 103 division.
Jake Simpson jumped out to a staggering 13-3 lead over Christian Alvarez of Connell in the first round.
Simpson began the second period in the down position and scored a quick escape before pinning Alvarez at 1:39.
"We've really started to pick it up as the season has gone on," said Martinez.
Othello's Julio Cerna, Ray Melo, Tyson Alvarez and Michael Carmona all won their matches by forfeit.
In the 152 division, Valentin Gonzalez of Othello was pinned by his opponent with 22 seconds remaining in the second round.
Anthony Gomez of Othello was pinned by Gabe Martinez at 3:55 in the 160 division.
At 215, Joey Valdez of Othello was pinned by Michael Cuello at 3:06.
"I think the team in general wrestled very well, even in the matches we lost," Martinez said. "I'm really pleased with the kids."
