Ephrata loses 37-30 Friday

EPHRATA — The Tigers won five straight match-ups but could not hold on to win against Deer Park Friday.

"Overall, I think they all wrestled hard," said head coach Dave Laird. "The young kids looked young."

Tyson Hubbard had a tough match against Viktor Nesenchuk in the 130 weight class.

Nesenchuk jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with a take down and a 3-point near fall in the first period.

In the second period, Hubbard was able to earn a take down of his own before Nesenchuk earned an escape and another take down.

Hubbard wriggled back into the match with another take down before the second period ended.

Hubbard picked up his last point of the match with an escape, after a Nesenchuk reversal, losing 10-6.

"Tyson is a scrappy, young freshman," said Laird.

At 112, Jake Horn defeated Levi Zadorozny.

Horn earned an early 6-0 lead in the first period and never looked back. He racked up an 11-0 lead before Zadorozny scored his first point with an escape in the second period.

Horn continued to dominate the match in third period with two consecutive take downs and a final take down to win the match 17-2.

"Jake Horn beat a quality kid," Laird said.

The night began with an exhibition match at 140.

Dallas Hintz forfeited the match against Ryan Jorgensen but the two matched up for a bout that did not count toward team scores.

With 14 seconds left in the third period of the match-up, Hintz pinned Jorgensen to win the exhibition.

At 145, Kevin Sieverkropp faced Cody Miller. Sieverkropp was unable to win any points against Miller and lost 6-0 after falling victim to a take down in each period of the match-up.

Zack Brissey earned Ephrata their first win of the night at 152.

Brissey had a take down against Reid Geyer to go up 2-0 in the first period and earned another two points before time expired.

In the second period, Brissey scored an escape followed immediately by a take down to stretch his lead to 7-1.

As time wound down in the second period, Brissy pinned Geyer for the win.

Cross had two take downs in the first period and earned a 3-point near fall in the second period before beating Cork 13-5.
