Danielle Baker takes title, Kasandra Turman named runner-up

MOSES LAKE — On Saturday the city welcomed its 2006 Miss Moses Lake, 18-year-old Danielle Baker.

Baker was one of five contestants competing for the title and will represent Moses Lake throughout the next year at public events, including a trip to Moses Lake's sister city Yonezawa, Japan.

Backstage, Baker shed a tear or two in the midst of being greeted by a flurry of friends and family. Constant hugs and words of congratulations in the moments after the pageant made for quite an emotional moment for the teenager.

Eighteen-year-old Kasandra Turman took first runner-up for Miss Moses Lake.

The Miss Moses Lake Pageant is a preliminary to the Miss Washington Pageant, the winner of which goes on to compete for the Miss America title.

In addition to her crown, Baker took home a $1,000 tuition scholarship, $500 tuition scholarship from Big Bend Community College, silver platter, competition wardrobe for Miss Washington, one-year membership to Xcell Total Fitness and a bouquet of flowers.

Baker was also the recipient of numerous awards including lifestyle and fitness, interview, talent, top ticket sales and casual wear.

Next up for Baker is to concentrate on representing Moses Lake and promoting her platform issue, Strengthening the Family.

As stated in her bio, Baker intends to address her platform issue by spending time with youth in the community and raising awareness about the importance of the family.

Before the Miss Moses Lake program started, winners of the Miss Teen and Miss Pre-Teen Moses Lake pageants were revealed.

Thirteen-year-old Caitlyn Lawson was named Miss Teen Moses Lake and 12-year-old Kristal Garland-Smith the Miss Pre-Teen Moses Lake winner.

"Now I'm going to go out and try to encourage youth to be themselves," Garland-Smith said after winning.

With her title Garland-Smith received a $200 savings bond.

For Lawson, being crowned marked a much anticipated moment in the young teen's life.

"I hoped it would happen and I was just very overwhelmed that it did happen," Lawson said.

Lawson was awarded a $400 savings bond, silver platter, sponsorship to the Washington Outstanding Teen Pageant and a one-year membership to Xcell Total Fitness. Lawson now goes on to compete in the Miss Teen Washington Pageant with the possibility of going to the national Teen Pageant program.

Guest appearances by Miss Washington 2005 Tina Marie Mares, former Miss Washington Doris J. Clark and several other royalty were introduced Saturday evening.

It was an emotional moment for Miss Moses Lake 2005 Stephanie Rios as she prepared to hand her crown over.

Rios said scholarship money and the friendships made in the last year have been the most important aspects of her time spent as Miss Moses Lake.
