Strong second half not enough for win

MOSES LAKE — The Chiefs outscored Ike 28-24 in the second half but it was not enough to overcome a staggering 37-point first half deficit. Moses Lake lost 85-48.

"It was a solid second half," said head coach Matt Strophy. "We played with energy and a sense of urgency. That makes a world of difference."

Just as was the case to begin the game, Eisenhower scored first in the second half.

Ann Noyes picked up a foul with less than a minute gone in the third to put Ike on the line shooting two.

Nearly a minute later, Carly Noyes went to the line for two and made them both to make it 22-58. She went to the line again to break a scoring drought by both teams, going 1-for-2.

Both teams continued to struggle from the field. The first field goal of the quarter came with four minutes remaining.

Eisenhower got a bucket and a trip to the line for a 3-point play to maintain their 37-point lead.

"We had 48 turnovers last time we played this team," Strophy said. "Our goal this time was to keep it under 30. By our count we had 29."

Remeca Norwood answered for the Chiefs, making a move to shake off her defender for the hoop. A few minutes later, Norwood earned a steal to set her team up for a scoring opportunity.

Moses Lake took advantage of it, with Carrie Sawyer finding Marielle McKean on a kick out pass for a mid-range jumper to make it 65-28.

Marielle McKean scored the final points for the Chiefs from the freethrow line, shooting 2-for-2 in a 1-and-1 situation.

Carly Noyes scored the next field goal for Moses Lake, earning the points and a foul. She completed the 3-point play making it 77-34.

With four minutes remaining, Brin Bergeson went to the line to shoot two and made one. She returned to the line and went 1-for-2 again less than a minute later.

Carly Noyes continued to battle down low and earned a bucket on a putback.

Marielle McKean earned the next score for Moses Lake on a layup, going from half court to the hole to get it and make it 80-40.

Norwood came up with another steal late in the quarter and Sawyer took advantage of it, draining her only 3-ball of the game.

The Chiefs scored on their next trip down court with Mackenzie McKean finding Sawyer for a layup.

"Mackenzie got the game ball," said Strophy. "This was her first game back from an MCL/ACL tear in August."

Marielle McKean had the final score of the game for Moses Lake. After a botched pass by Ike, she chased down the ball, got the layup and the foul for a 3-point play.

Marielle McKean led the Chiefs with 11 points and shot 5-for-5 from the freethrow line. Carly Noyes had eight points. Sawyer had seven points. Mackenzie McKean was 4-for-4 from the line.
