Southridge held scoreless in third quarter

MOSES LAKE — The Chiefs looked sluggish against Southridge Tuesday but were able to win handily 34-16.

"It wasn't the effort I wanted to see," said head coach Matt Strophy. "I hesitate to be negative because we won."

Moses Lake came out strong in the third, holding the Suns scoreless for the entire eight minutes of the quarter.

The Chiefs owned the floor on the first possession of the third with Marielle McKean finding Ann Noyes down low for a layup.

Southridge had some trouble maintaining possession on the ensuing trips down court, turning the ball over three times in two minutes.

"On defense we achieved one of our goals," Strophy said. "We held them to under 30. We held them to 16."

After the last turnover in the stretch, Kelly Sutherland loaded up and drained a 3-ball to make it 23-9.

Moses Lake continued to dominate in the low post with Ann Noyes earning a blocked shot and a steal and Carly Noyes getting a blocked shot of her own two possessions later.

Brin Bergeson scored on a putback between the defensive plays of the Noyes sisters to stretch the lead further for the Chiefs.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first quarter, Moses Lake went on a 9-0 scoring run to take command of the game.

McKean and Carrie Sawyer both fed the ball inside to Carly Noyes, who had eight points in the first period and 14 for the game.

Late in the first, Sutherland found Sawyer on the outside for the 3-point shot.

The quarter ended with McKean connecting with Bergeson for a layup to put the Chiefs up 13-7.

The second quarter got off to a slow start with a two minute drought before Ann Noyes kicked a pass out to Sawyer for a mid-range jump shot to start the scoring off.

Remeca Norwood came off the bench in the second quarter to provide Moses Lake with the spark they were missing, earning a steal and continually putting pressure on the Southridge offense in the low post.

"Remeca got the game ball tonight because she was the only one who played with any sort of energy," said Strophy.

Megan Fredrick scored her only points of the game in the fourth quarter, earning a layup on a Southridge turnover to make it 31-11.

"We lacked focus and intensity," Strophy said. "We can't do that with the next four teams on the schedule or we're going to go 0-4."
