Moses Lake takes second

KENNEWICK — Moses Lake advanced 11 wrestlers to the district finals Saturday after taking 24 to Kamiakin Friday. The Chiefs placed second overall with a score of 266. Pasco took first in the tournament with a total score of 271.

In the semi-finals bouts Moses Lake was whittled down to just four advancing to the finals.

Wrestling at 135, Cody Hoiness faced off against Andrew Tally of Kamiakin.

Hoiness and Tally battled but kept the score close. Hoiness was down 4-2 at the end of the first round but gained the lead in the second after an escape, a take down and a reversal.

In the third period, Hoiness and Tally battled hard, scoring eight and six points respectively.

Tally opened the period with a reversal to gain the lead. Hoiness was able to score a reversal of his own and earn a 2-point near fall to cement his lead in the final period and won 15-12.

Hoiness matched up against Tim Whitley in the finals and lost a major decision 11-3.

At 103, Roberto Cruz took on Kyle Vanhorn of Eastmont for a spot in the finals.

Cruz took at early 2-0 lead after a take down. Vanhorn erased the lead with a reversal before Cruz claimed it again with an escape.

Cruz scored another take down before the first period was over to make it 5-2. Cruz extended his lead to 10-4 in the second round with two take downs and an escape.

With 33 seconds remaining in the match, Cruz pinned Vanhorn for the win.

In the finals Cruz took on Zeke Castro and won a major decision for the individual title by a score of 11-3.

Matt Palmer took on Tony Yocom of Davis in the 119 bout.

Palmer fell behind 2-0 early before surging to a 5-2 lead. Yocom regained the lead with a reversal and two near falls for two and three points.

Palmer rallied late in the first round to earn a pin with three seconds remaining.

Palmer faced off against Jake Muse of Southridge and was pinned at 5:50.

In the semi-final at 215 pounds, Brett Fredrickson faced off against Nick Puzycki of Kamiakin.

Frederickson continued his reign as the pinning king, having pinned all of his previous opponents in the tournament, with a pin at 1:03 to win the bout.

Frederickson took on Dimiti Miles of Pasco in the finals and won a 3-2 decision for the individual title.
