Jacks and Tigers each win three individual titles

CHELAN — Ephrata entered the finals with a slim lead over Quincy in the race for second place at Saturday's CWAC North district wrestling tournament.

The Tigers managed to hold the lead and top Quincy by 2.5 points for second place in the tournament. Cashmere won the tournament by a comfortable margin.

With Quincy trailing Ephrata by a narrow margin, the Jacks' Todd Yeates faced off with Ephrata's Kevin Sieverkropp for the 145-pound title. Yeates won the match, and in doing so pushed the Jacks ahead of Ephrata in the team standings.

In the next match, Ephrata's Zack Brissey defeated Cashmere's Brandon Kilgore for the 152-pound title. Brissey's victory moved the Tigers ahead of Quincy for good.

Ephrata coach Dave Laid was impressed with Brissey's dominance Saturday.

"No one even competed with him really," Laird said.

Jake Horn won the Tigers' first championship of the night with a victory over Jake Luczynski of Cascade in the 112-pound final.

At 140 pounds, Ephrata's Dallas Hintz overcame a week-long illness to win the district championship.

"Hintz performed outstanding," said Laird. "We were honestly hoping to (just) get him through the tournament."

For the Jacks, Jared Reyes beat Andrew Miller of Omak to win the 119 pound title.

Following Reyes, Gabe Lindquist won another title for Quincy by beating Tanner Wood of Cashmere in the 125 pound final.

Quincy coach Manuel Ybarra was pleased not only with his champions, but with two wrestlers who finished third in the tournament.

At 112 pounds, Armando Herrera avenged a 5-3 loss to Cashmere's Tyler McCord by pinning McCord in the consolation final. Herrera was ahead big in the match before he secured the pin.

In the 119 pound class, Quincy's Henry Hernandez lost his opening match to the eventual second place wrestler, then came back to capture third place.

Hernandez beat Cashmere's Tanner Schwind by technical fall in the match for third place.

Overall, Ybarra seemed happy with the way his team wrestled.

"Working harder (in practice) helped," said Ybarra. "We wrestled respectably."

Ephrata wrestlers exceed expectations at the tournament.

"We were hoping to get nine through (to the regional tournament)," Laird said.

Ephrata qualified 12 wrestlers for next weekend's regional tournament in Moses Lake. Quincy will send 10 wrestlers to regionals.
