Moses Lake holds Kennewick to three in third

MOSES LAKE — Kennewick's only field goal of the third quarter came after a botched freethrow attempt and trimmed Moses Lake's lead to 30. The Chiefs defeated the Lady Lions 55-30.

"Our defense is gaining a reputation," said head coach Matt Strophy. "People are saying 'What can we do?' because we're going to alter a shot if we're not blocking it."

Moses Lake led from the outset and never relinquished the lead.

Marielle McKean scored the first points for Moses Lake on a drive to the hole and drew the foul. She made it 2-0 but could not complete the three point play.

Carly Noyes got started scoring early, making the next bucket for the Chiefs. She ended the night, leading the team in scoring with 15.

McKean was about to dish the ball to Ann Noyes for a layup to make it 6-2.

"Ann got the game ball tonight," said Strophy. "She did great getting rebounds, communicating, blocking out and rotating on the ball."

Kelly Sutherland connected with Carly Noyes, who was taking advantage of a mismatch down low, for another hoop.

Late in the first quarter, Ann and Carly Noyes had a pair of blocked shots to keep Kennewick from scoring and forcing a turnover.

In return, Carrie Sawyer hit Carly Noyes under the hoop for a layup.

Megan Fredrick made the final shot of the period, a long jumper for two to make it 15-7.

Sawyer opened the second period with a bucket of her own to push the lead to 10 for Moses Lake.

McKean continued to find the open player, connecting with Carly Noyes again for a mid-key jumper. Noyes followed the bucket with another and drew the foul. She completed the 3-point play to put Moses Lake up 22-10.

Brin Bergeson stepped up to the arc on the next trip down court and drained a 3-ball for her first points of the ball game. She followed up her first points with a long jumper from Fredrick to end the half.

After playing outstanding defense in the third quarter, Moses Lake went into the fourth up 42-17.

Sutherland hit a 3-ball with six minutes left in the game and with three minutes remaining Sawyer hit another three of her own.

In the final two minutes of the game Remeca Norwood scored her only points of the night, and Moses Lake's final points of the ball game, after battling down low to get the layup.

Sutherland and Sawyer had eight points each. Bergeson and Ann Noyes had seven points apiece.
