Wrestlers prep for districts

| February 3, 2006 8:00 PM

Big Nine District Tournament (4A)

Location: Kamiakin HS, Kennewick

Times: Friday, 6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.

Local Teams: Moses Lake

2005 Champion: Moses Lake

Outlook: Much like the regular season, this appears to be a three-team race. Moses Lake, Pasco and Eastmont all look to prove their league supremacy after the three teams each finished the Big Nine regular season with 9-1 records.

Pasco (26) and Moses Lake (25) have the most wrestlers participating and will likely battle for the top spot. Wenatchee leads all teams with three number one seeded wrestlers. Head-to-head matches between Moses Lake and Pasco wrestlers in the semi-finals may be the difference in the team race.

CWAC North District Tournament (2A)

Location: Chelan HS

Time: Saturday, 11 a.m.

Local Teams: Ephrata, Quincy

2005 Champion: Ephrata

Outlook: Regular season champion Cashmere appears to be the favorite after earning convincing dual meet wins over Ephrata and Quincy. The Tigers have the best chance of beating Cashmere. Ephrata and Quincy each have several contenders for individual championships.

CWAC South District Tournament (2A)

Location: Othello HS

Times: Friday, 4 p.m.; Saturday, 12:30 p.m.

Local Teams: Othello

2005 Champion: Grandview, Naches Valley (tie)

Outlook: Othello looks to improve upon last year's third-place finish. The Huskies, coming off an undefeated dual meet season ending in with a win at the Dream Duals, appear to be the favorite. Grandview will give the Huskies their biggest challenge, and Toppenish should battle Connell for third place.

SCAC East District Tournament (1A)

Location: Warden HS

Time: Saturday, 10 a.m.

Local Teams: Warden, Royal, Wahluke

2005 Champion: Warden

Outlook: Warden and Royal are the class of the tournament. In 2005, the teams swept the individual titles.

Warden should repeat as district champs by overwhelming the competition with their team depth. Last year, Warden's 455 points were more than the third through eighth place teams scored combined.

Royal will likely repeat their second place finish from a year ago.

Northeast A / Bi-County District Tournament (1A, B)

Location: Rearden HS

Time: Saturday, 10 a.m.

Local Teams: Almira/Coulee-Hartline, Lind-Ritzville

Outlook: League tournament champions Wilbur-Creston-Keller from the Bi-County and Colfax from the Northeast A hope to add another piece of hardware to the trophy case. Newport, Davenport and Republic should also have strong showings. While not team title contenders, ACH and Ritzville hope to qualify several individual wrestlers for next weekend's regional tournament.
