Cougars come out strong after tough loss

MOSES LAKE - Warden faced off against Bridgeport in the consolation game of the Moses Lake Christian Academy holiday tournament Thursday, defeating Bridgeport 61-49.

The Cougars found themselves playing in the consolation round after losing a close call to Tri-Cities Prep Wednesday.

"It was a good little tournament for us," said Warden head coach Wes Richins. "It's the end of our non-league schedule."

Alex Rosas got the point-scoring started for Warden with a jump-shot after nearly a full two minutes with no score to give the Cougars the lead.

Bridgeport answered with a 3-ball but earned only four more points in the quarter, as the Warden defense out-hustled them.

Chris Felsman opened up a 12-5 lead for Warden with a 3-pointer as the period neared the halfway point.

As the quarter wound down both teams suffered from turnovers, with the Cougars seeing three consecutive turnovers mar the otherwise solid period of play. Rosas finished out the quarter with a 3 for Warden and gave them an 18-7 lead.

Bridgeport cut the lead to 9 points to open the second quarter but Rosas connected with Matt Kottong to push it back to an 11-point ball game.

Near the four-minute mark, Chance Buck came up with a steal and finished it off with a layup for the Cougars to make it 24-13.

Buck finished the period with a pass to Rosas who drained a 3-ball to send the teams into the locker room with Warden looking at a 13-point lead.

Bridgeport struck first in the second half, hitting a 3 to kick off the third quarter and narrowed the margin further with another bucket.

Matt Kottong put a stop to the small scoring run with a putback that was followed up by a 2-for-2 trip to the line by Rosas. Felsman hit another 3-ball halfway through the period to give Warden a comfortable 43-31 lead over Bridgeport.

The final field goal of the quarter came on a layup by Efy Pruneda with a dish from Rosas.

Felsman's hot hand followed him into the final period of the game as he hit a 3 in the early going of the fourth quarter.

Late in the period Aaron Ruiz went 3-for-4 at the free throw line for the Cougars, giving them a 59-40 lead after the second trip.

Rosas led Warden with 18 points. Felsman earned 14 points for the Cougars. Kottong had a solid night for Warden with 11 points, 10 boards and six blocked shots.
