Tigers struggle against Selah
Ephrata 15, Vikings 63
EPHRATA — The Tigers earned three wins against a tough Selah squad Thursday.
"It was a disappointing night," said Ephrata head coach Dave Laird. "We expected to compete much better than we did."
Ephrata's first win came in the 152-pound bout during which Ryan Cross of Ephrata took on John Borden.
Cross came out aggressively in the first round, picking up seven points to Borden's three. The early pressure from Cross gave way in the second and third rounds of the bout.
Cross earned a takedown to begin the second round before Borden struggled free. After the quick scuffle, both wrestlers circled one another, looking for an opening that never emerged. In the final seconds of the round both Cross and Borden were called for a double stall warning.
Cross gained ground in the final round of the bout, earning an escape and takedown. He finished out the matchup with a point on a Borden penalty, winning 13-5.
"Ryan beat a solid kid tonight," said Laird.
Dallas Hintz of Ephrata earned a technical fall over Willie Hays in the 160-pound bout.
Hintz began the matchup with a takedown and back-to-back near falls for a combined seven points.
In the second round, Hintz worked his way out of the down position quickly and then tried to earn a takedown. Before Hintz could score his eventual takedown, Hays was penalized with a stall warning.
Hintz closed out the match with a 6-point run that included an escape, a takedown and a 3-point near fall for a 16-0 victory.
The 171-pound bout gave the Tigers their only other win of the dual when Jakob Torgeson of Ephrata took on Cameron Rainford. It took Torgeson a takedown and just 52 seconds to pin Rainford.
At 130 pounds, Steven Mortimor of Ephrata was pinned by T.C. Girrard. In the 135-pound bout, Brandon Butcher of Ephrata was pinned by Caleb Burton. Erich Sonnabend of Ephrata was pinned by Steven Schramm at 140 pounds. Chris Davidson of Ephrata fell to Levi Garcia at 145 pounds. In the 189-pound bout Scott Henson of Ephrata lost to Sean Heide 7-0. At 215 pounds, Anthony Johnson of Ephrata was pinned by Dan Escamilla. Mitchell Friend of Ephrata was pinned by Derrek Scoggin at 112 pounds. Kurt Nygard of Ephrata was pinned by Robert Espinosa in the 119-pound bout.
Shane Merritt, Carlos Torres and Brock Huffman of Selah won the 103, 125 and 285-pound bouts respectively by forfeit.
