Devils get revenge for earlier loss against Wolverines

WILSON CREEK — After a hard-fought first half, the Devils overpowered Cascade Christian Academy in the second half to defeat the Wolverines 51-34.

"They beat us by one last time we played them," said Wilson Creek head coach Kevin Goetz. "We were hungry for a win."

Wilson Creek's hunger became apparent in the second half when Daniel Ottis picked up a steal for the Devils in the opening seconds of the third quarter. Then Adam Smalley was able to connect with Peter Benedict for a layup to give Wilson Creek a 29-14 advantage over Cascade Christian.

"I just told them to stay home and make them (Cascade Christian) beat us on the outside," said Goetz. "Offensively, we worked the ball around and got it inside to Kevin (Trepanier) and Peter (Benedict)."

With nearly four minutes gone in the period, the Wolverines earned their first field goal of the period in an effort to close the gap.

Benedict answered for Wilson Creek with a putback to maintain the Devils' lead.

In the closing seconds of the third, Phillip Fuget fouled a Cascade Christian player and sent him to the line to shoot two. The Wolverines closed out the quarter on a high note with a 1-for-2 trip to the line and cut the lead to 11.

Juan Garcia opened the fourth with a putback to extend the Devils' lead.

Fuget and Benedict continued to produce for Wilson Creek's offense — with a layup off the glass for Fuget and a putback for Benedict — to keep the Devils' advantage hovering near 15 points.

"Peter (Benedict) brings an enthusiasm and intensity to our team," said Goetz. "Daniel (Ottis) is always tremendous on defense."

A jumper on the run for Ottis gave Wilson Creek a 45-29 lead with under four minutes to play. With less than two minutes remaining, Fuget followed his own missed free throw for a putback to seal the Wolverines' fate and earn the last field goal of the night for either team.

The first half of the ball game was a low-scoring affair, with Wilson Creek leading 12-11 after the first eight minutes. Six fouls by Cascade Christian in the first quarter slowed the action and gave Wilson Creek an opportunity to go on an 8-0 scoring run in the early going.

Both teams tightened up their play in the second quarter, with the Wolverines tying the game at 12 after a trip to the foul line. The tie was the last time Cascade Christian would come close to Wilson Creek on the scoreboard.

Benedict led the Devils' winning effort with 17 points. Ottis put up 10 points for Wilson Creek. Fuget and Trepanier had eight points each. Garcia earned six points. Jacob Buchanan earned two points for the Devils.
