Cougars take down Granger 65-12

WARDEN — Rick Bowers watched his team win 11 bouts and earn their coach his 400th career win Thursday.

"We did all right tonight," said Bowers. "The big match of the night was at 112 pounds and the Granger kid didn't make weight. It just didn't pan out but he'll (Jesse Guerra) see him again."

Bouts began with the 285-pound weight class, in which Robby Horn of Warden faced off against Miguel Garcia. Garcia took an early advantage, taking down Horn but Horn battled back, earning a reversal and gaining a 3-2 lead after Garcia was penalized for locking his hands. In the second period, Horn extended his lead to three points and finished Garcia off with a pin at 3:07.

Frankie Jimenez of Warden took on Joe Salcedo at 103 pounds in the only non-pin win of the night, defeating the Granger wrestler with a 19-4 technical fall. Salcedo scored first with a take down but was wrapped up by Jimenez who earned a quick reversal and a 3-point near fall to end the first round. Jimenez continued to dominate Salcedo, earning a take down and then cutting the Granger wrestler loose before taking him down again. With time winding down in the second period, Jimenez earned another 3-point near fall and finished the bout with a final 3-point near fall in the third.

At 135 pounds, Robert Pruneda of Warden faced off against Jaime Martinez. Pruneda earned an early 5-0 lead with a takedown and 3-point near fall in the first period and finished Martinez off with a pin at 4:00.

AJ Martinez of Warden recorded the next win for the Cougars in the 140-pound bout against Jesus Lemus. After gaining a 7-2 lead with a reversal and 2- and 3-point near falls, Martinez was able to stick Lemus with five seconds left in the first period.

To continue the win streak, Scott Phillips of Warden matched up against Daniel Lopez at 152 pounds. After a takedown by Lopez, Phillips tied the match with a reversal. Lopez then earned a reversal of his own. Not to be out-wrestled, Phillips tied the score again with another reversal. In the second period Phillips opened up a sizeable lead with another reversal, two 3-point near falls and a 2-point near fall. Lopez earned his final points of the bout on a reversal to begin the third period but soon found himself on his back. Phillips recorded another 3-point near fall and finished Lopez off with a pin with eight seconds left in the bout.

In the 171-pound bout Joel Martinez of Warden took on Humberto Morales. Martinez earned a quick takedown and then cut Morales loose to make it a 2-1 match-up early. After taking another good shot, Martinez recorded another takedown and closed Morales out with a pin after just one minute of wrestling.

Kenny Guerra of Warden made short work of Matthew Guerra in the 189-pound bout, earning a takedown and then sticking the Granger wrestler for a pin at 1:10.

To finish out the night of pins, Justin Rollins of Warden defeated Josh Gomez with 4 seconds left in the first period.

Jesse Guerra, Chris Kalous and Alan Martinez all won their respective matches by forfeit.

"Some of the matches didn't pan out tonight," said Bowers.

Chad Martinez and Freddy Flores suffered the only two losses of the night for the Cougars.
