Othello 53, Prosser 28

OTHELLO — The Huskies defeated an outmanned Prosser squad 53-28 Thursday to improve their CWAC record to 2-0 on the year.

Despite the outcome of the dual, which was never in doubt as Prosser gave up five forfeits on the night, the action on the mats saw the teams go back-and-forth throughout the night.

The Huskies, a young team which on Thursday had more freshmen (4) than seniors (3) in the varsity lineup, are making up for their lack of experience with hard work.

"I've had some hard working individuals in the past," said Othello head coach Ruben Martinez, "but they're one of the hardest working groups I've had."

Prosser's Osmar Jaimez opened the dual with a 9-1 victory over Jake Smith at 103 pounds. Othello answered back at 119 pounds when Derek Stelter turned in a dominant 19-2 technical-fall victory over Marvin Sandoval. Stelter was sharp on his feet, earning takedowns in the first 10 seconds of each round and scoring six takedowns overall. The Othello junior used a variety of moves from the standing position, including a duck-under, a low single and a double-leg takedown to score his points.

After Stelter's victory, it was Prosser's turn, as Joseph Huizar picked up a first-period pin of Othello's Chris Gifford at 130 pounds and Zak Hulse of Prosser pinned the Huskies' Ray Melo at 140 pounds.

At 145 pounds, Jack Calvert got the Huskies back on track with a second-round pin of the Mustangs' David Huizar. In the match, Calvert took down the dangerous Huizar five times, often having to avoid and work out of throw attempts by the Prosser wrestler.

Martinez was pleased with Calvert's performance and his ability to avoid getting caught by Huizar.

"I really want them to get better on their feet and not make mistakes," said Martinez of both Calvert and 285-pound wrestler Michael Carmona.

Carmona capped off the dual for the Huskies with a third-round pin of Prosser's Josh Castilleja. In the match, Carmona took Castilleja down twice, and from there controlled the match from the top position.

Othello picked up their other pin at 160 pounds, where Kevin Smith put away Prosser's Ivan Barosa with a first-round fall. Smith took Barosa down three times before picking up the pin, including a nice fireman's carry midway through the round.

The Huskies' Tyson Alvarez at 152 pounds and Lukas Vetter at 171 pounds were both losers by fall.

"We're about where we want to be," said Martinez of where his team is at this early point of the season. "We're gonna be fine."
