Chiefs defeat Sunnyside, West Valley
Double dual goes well for Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE - Moses Lake took down two 3A teams during the first dual meet of the season, defeating Sunnyside 49-17 and West Valley 71-4.
The Chiefs combined for 14 pins in two matches with Jordan Hill, Jon Silva, Josh Nielsen, Justin West, John Fackrell and Brett Frederickson each earning two pins.
Moses Lake dominated West Valley, earning eight of the night's 14 pins against the Rams.
"Everyone performed really well tonight, going for pins and the extra points," said Moses Lake head coach Jamie Wise. "The kids stayed in great position all night and everybody was doing their job."
Hill began the match with a quick start, pinning Nick Crider in 44 seconds after earning a 2-0 lead with a take down.
Two bouts later Silva pinned Jordan Packard one minute into their match-up in the 145-pound weight class. Silva's pin was followed by a pin from John Hernandez who stunned Eddie Reeves with a pin 30 seconds into the match.
Nielsen continued the pinning trend but only just, taking nearly the entirety of his match to pin Shea Smart. Nielsen enjoyed a 10-0 lead before earning the pin.
West added to the pins and team score, defeating Nate Miller with 1:09 left in the first round of the 171-pound bout.
With a 5-0 lead and 24 seconds left in the first round of the 189-pound bout between Fackrell and Brent Baggarley, Fackrell pinned the West Valley wrestler for victory.
Fackrell's pin was followed by the quickest Moses Lake pin of the night. Frederickson jumped out to a 2-0 lead after taking down Nester Gonzalez in the 215-pound bout and pinned him just 25 seconds into the first round.
Gabe Guzman earned Moses Lake's last pin of the night, sticking Casey Pitney one minute into the second round after building a 10-0 lead.
Thomas Pheiffer defeated Jordan Packard 12-8 in the 140-pound weight class and Tad Harman rounded out the win for the Chiefs with a 6-2 win over Ray Oslin in the 285-pound bout.
Andrew Valdez, David Peralez and Matt Palmer won their respective bouts by forfeit.
Tyler Vela was defeated by Deven Stlter 14-4 in the 119-pound match.
In the first round of matches, Moses Lake took on Sunnyside.
"We're better than I thought we'd be right now," said Wise. "That makes me feel better about going into the Inland Empires this weekend."
Hill posted his first pin of the night with 19 seconds remaining in the first period of the 135-pound match after gaining a 5-1 lead with a take down and a 3-point near fall early in the round.
Silva's first pin came mid-way through the second period of the 145-pound weight class against Tony Garcia. Silva jumped out to a 9-0 lead before sticking Garcia for the win.
After dominating Jesus Mendoza with a 10-0 lead, Nielsen earned a pin with 1:06 remaining in the third period of the 160-pound class.
West, wrestling at 171 pounds, followed Nielsen's late pin with an early one against Juan Galindo. The win took West just 59 seconds to complete and cleared the way for Fackrell who took even less time to pin Abel Cardenas. Fackrell took a mere 51 seconds to stick Cardenas after taking an early 2-0 lead with a take down in the 189-pound match-up.
Frederickson, weighing in at 215-pounds, earned a 2-0 lead with a take down in his match against David Corona but took a little longer to pin the Sunnyside wrestler, finishing him off with 48 seconds left in the first period.
Palmer took an early 3-2 lead against Eric Mejia in the first period of the 130-pound weight class with an escape and take down and followed it up with back-to-back 3-point near falls in the second round. Mejia tried for a comeback in the third round of the match-up but could not get past Palmer who posted a 12-9 win for the Chiefs.
Wrestling at 140 pounds, Pheiffer, defeated Zeke Canales 9-1 after dominating the Sunnyside wrestler with two take downs, a 3-point near fall and a reverse.
Hernandez went the full three rounds with Zeke Galvan in the 152-pound match, defeating Galvan 14-7 with three escapes, two reversals, a 3-point near fall, a 2-point near fall and one take down.
In the 285-pound weight class, Harman went a grinding three rounds with Angelo Salazar to win 2-0 after earning a take down in the opening minute.
"Their (Sunnyside's) studs are in the lighter weight classes and the kids had some super tough matches," said Wise.
Valdez was pinned by Steven Romero in the 103-pound class. Peralez fell to Isaac Romero 9-2 at 112 pounds. Vela lost to Ricardo Rivera 13-0 in the 119-pound bout. Guzman was defeated by J.T. Gonzalez 9-3 at 125 pounds.
"I'm happy, the kids did a pretty good job," said Wise.
