Don "Arkie" Garrett
Don "Arkie" Garrett passed away Thursday, Aug. 3 at his home.
Don was born in Sioux City, Iowa July 14, 1931. His family then moved to Arkansas and then to Moses Lake around 1943. Since his arrival in Moses Lake and being most recently from Arkansas, he was from that time known as Arkie.
He graduated from Moses Lake High School in 1950 where he was quarterback on the football team and lettered in three other sports. He was scouted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in his senior year of high school but decided to enlist in the Navy instead.
Arkie attended Central Washington College after serving four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War on the USS Boxer.
Arkie attended barber school in Seattle and was a barber in Moses Lake. He also had a band that played the Turf and other events around the Columbia Basin for many years.
He served as president of the local Musician's Union for some time. Arkie married Joyce McAbee Joy in 1969. Arkie and Joyce found the Lord in the late 1970s and attended several local churches together; currently the Assembly of God.
He served as the Grant County Jail Chaplain for about 20 years, where he helped turn around the lives of many inmates. He considered this service to the Lord as the most important in his life.
Arkie was the first president of the MLAA.
He is survived by his wife Joyce; his sons: Stephen Garrett and wife Jacquie, Mark Joy, David Joy, Marvin Garrett, Patrick Garrett and Jacob Joy.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Della May and Glenn "Hap" Garrett and his brothers Bob and Tim.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12 at the Assembly of God Church, 431 E. Brown, Moses Lake.
