Tennis courts prove busy in summer months

MOSES LAKE - Some of Moses Lake's best and brightest on the tennis court have competed in four tournaments throughout the state over the summer.

The Wenatchee tournament was held July 11 through 13.

In the girls 18 championship singles Nikki Chambers advanced with wins against Sheehan Trippel, Nicole Kirch and Genissa Bornog to take second in the championship after losing to Molly Knox 2-6, 4-6.

In the boys 18 championship Tony Holiday made it through to the semi-final round with wins over Grant Guelich and Jonathan Witherspoon. In the semi-final Holiday was defeated by Ali Ta 3-6, 6-2, 5-7.

Adrian Juarez and Brent McCaffery teamed up in the boys 18 doubles but were knocked by the team of Dane/Kim 1-6, 1-6.

Conner Lange competed in the boys 14 challenger singles defeating Max Ward in the round of 16 and being removed from competition by Cory Johnson 6-4, 1-6, 1-6.

In the boys 16 challenger singles Ben Nye advanced through the consolation round of 16 defeating Michael Moore, Jace Sherrill and Eric Bemis before losing to A. Thomas 2-6, 5-7. Nye then lost in the round of 32 to John Henderson 6-7(4), 2-6.

At the Spokane tournament July 14 through 16, Chambers was again defeated by Knox in the girls 18 championship singles final, losing 4-6, 2-6. Chambers made her run to the finals by defeating Rayna Allen, Kennedy Scott and Elise Otto.

Nolan Hansen and Lars Odegaard teamed up in the boys 18 doubles division but were defeated in the round of 16 by Ortiz/Skinner 0-6, 3-6.

In boys 18 challenger singles Holiday placed second in the final after being defeated by Ta 4-6, 6-2, 5-7. Holiday qualified for the finals by defeating Joshua Burwell, Jonathan Witherspoon and John Cadagan.

Adrian Juarez and Brent McCaffery teamed up in the boys 18 doubles but were defeated in the round of 32 by the team of Ta/Witherspoon 6-3, 2-6, 0-6.

In boys 14 challenger singles Lange was defeated by Justin McClain 3-6, 4-6 in the round of 16.

At the Yakima tournament July 17 though 19, Chambers was knocked out of play in the round of 16, losing to Rebecca Berger 2-6, 2-6, after defeating Kari Fiske in the first round.

Holiday was eliminated in the round of 16 by Blaine Sherrill 4-6, 3-6 in the boys 18 challenger singles division.

In boys 16 challenger singles, Nye was defeated by Trevor Takami 3-6, 0-6 in the round of 16 and was knocked out of tournament play after losing to Mark Ishimitsu in the consolation quarterfinals.

Nye paired up with Clifford Lau of Anchorage, Alaska in the boys 18 challenger doubles to defeat the team of Ta/Witherspoon 6-3, 6-4 for a tournament victory.

In Ellensburg July 22 and 23 Juarez and Nye teamed up in the boys 16 doubles to win the consolation finals against the team of Billows/Schaich 6-1, 6-1. Juarez and Nye found themselves in the consolation rounds after losing to Alliston/Bemis in the semi-finals.

In the boys 16 challenger singles, Nye took third place by defeating Richard Long, Jr. 6-2, 6-2. Nye beat Bemis and John Sampson before losing to Kyle Servatius in the semi-finals.

Lange rounded out the weekend with a fourth place finish, losing to Aaron Porter 2-6, 2-6. Lange advanced after defeating Michael Komorowski and then lost to Josiah Jackson.
