Knights end game against Wahluke in five soaked innings
ROYAL CITY — The Knights got the scoring started in the bottom of the second, scoring 12 runs, and never looked back; beating the Warriors 13-0 in five innings.
Weather conditions plagued both teams but were more apparent for Wahluke with a no-hitter against Ray Valle and four errors on the day.
"After the game the plate umpire said Valle was around the plate with every pitch," said Royal head coach Rick Mitchell. "He pitched well, especially for the climate." Valle faced just 18 batters, striking out eight and walking three.
Kyle Scroggins had a lead off triple for Royal in the bottom of the second that was followed by a walk for Andy Garza.
Zach Lewis doubled to send Scroggins home and put Garza on third and give Royal a 1-0 lead.
Cash Brown then earned a double on a Wahluke error and recorded two RBIs with Lewis and Garza crossing the dish for the Knights.
With Daniel Garza at bat, Brown came home after stealing third. Daniel Garza's out was the first out of the inning for Royal. Valle had an infield base hit for Royal to put another runner on base after Daniel Garza's at bat cleared the bags for the Knights.
Valle advanced on a single by AJ Eldredge and the bases were loaded when Jeff Jack wore a pitch for the walk.
Garrett Werlinger came to bat with three men on and one out and hit a single that earned two RBIs, sending Valle and Eldredge back to the dugout. During Werlinger's at bat Jack was tagged, giving the Knights their second out of the inning.
With Werlinger on, Scroggins, Andy Garza and Lewis each wore a pitch. Lewis' at bat sent Werlinger home on the forced run to make it 7-0.
Brown earned two RBIs for the Knights on a single, sending Scroggins and Lewis home.
Daniel Garza gave Royal the 10-run margin after hitting an infield double and earning two RBIs, sending Lewis and Brown across the plate to make it 11-0.
Royal earned one more run in the inning when Valle belted a double that sent Daniel Garza home.
The only other run of the ballgame came in the bottom of the third.
Lewis doubled to left-center to get on base for the Knights after two outs to begin the inning and was batted in by Brown.
"It was an ugly day," said Mitchell. "It probably cost both teams a few at bats."
Royal's 13 runs came on 10 hits and the Knights committed one error. Wahluke had no runs, on no hits with four errors.
