Women kicks knife wielding attacker to escape unhurt

BEVERLY — A 23-year-old woman awoke early Wednesday morning after a man carrying a knife pulled the covers from her face as she lay sleeping in bed, authorities said.

The apparent incident occurred within the 17000 block of Pasco Street where Grant County Sheriff's Office deputies were soon called about a burglary and attempted assault.

The GCSO reported that Delia Sandoval of Beverly was awakened when an intruder pulled the covers from her as she slept.

Sandoval told police that the suspect clutched an article of clothing in one hand to cover his face and held a knife in a stabbing position in the other hand. Sandoval reacted by yelling out to her sister-in-law in the other room and then kicked at the alleged attacker, which apparently caused him to drop the knife, the police report states.

The alleged suspect then ran from the room.

Sandoval's sister-in-law opened her bedroom door and witnessed the suspect run down the hallway and trip over a large toy car. As the suspect tripped, he dropped the clothing article he was apparently using to cover his face.

The suspect then grabbed the clothing item and ran for the back door, but apparently bumped the kitchen table on the way out and broke a glass.

When deputies showed up on the scene, Sandoval and her sister-in-law said they recognized the alleged intruder.

The GCSO has named Miguel Angel Barajas Alcala, 20, of Beverly, as the suspected intruder. Barajas was arrested on outstanding warrants and was also charged in this incident with first-degree burglary and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, the GCSO stated.

Deputies showed up at Barajas' mother's residence, where she escorted them to the suspect, who was staying in an out building away from the main house.

Barajas was arrested without incident and taken to Grant County Jail.

His bail was set at $100,000 and his next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 20 at 9 a.m.
