Incident not related to MLHS violence rumors last week

MOSES LAKE — Officials with the Moses Lake Police Department are investigating an incident where two homes and a vehicle were reportedly hit by gunfire Sunday night.

MLPD officers responded to the 1400 block of Hamilton Road at 9 p.m., where the two houses and vehicle were hit by the gunfire from a handgun. No injuries were reported in the incident.

MLPD Chief Dean Mitchell said officers are continuing to follow up on a number of significant leads regarding the gunfire. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact MLPD Sgt. Sands at (509) 766-9230.

Mitchell said Monday that the incident was not gang related, and was not related to any unsubstantiated rumors of anticipated violence at Moses Lake High School. Mitchell said MLPD officers will continue to show their presence at the school throughout the week.

The Moses Lake School District Superintendent, Steve Chestnut, reported at Thursday's board meeting that absences at MLHS were high that day, with 1,000 students were not in school.

The high absentee rate comes after rumors last week of a fight that was said to break out later in the week at the high school between two groups of students.
