Mabel "Marie" Borck

Mabel "Marie" Borck, 80, formerly of Ephrata, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, in Moses Lake. She was born on July 2, 1925 to William Henry Yarwood and Theresa Himmelspach Yarwood of Mohler.

She attended high school in Harrington, and married her high school sweetheart, Lawrence Borck, after the completion of his service to the Marines on Feb. 15, 1947. The couple then moved to Ritzville where Lawrence served as a deputy sheriff and they operated a motel. In 1951, they moved to Florence, Mont. and in 1953 moved to Ephrata. Marie volunteered time to the North Central Washington Camp Fire Girls program for several years and was awarded the highest honor of the Gulick Award for her service. She became active in the Republican party in the early 1960s following her grandfather's footsteps William Henry Yarwood, who was elected in 1898 as Clerk of Lincoln County. Marie served as a state committeewoman from 1965 to 1970, delegate alternate to the 1968 national convention, county chairwoman 1971-1972, a member of the Electoral College for the 1972 Presidential election, and continued afterwards to devote her time and effort to both local and national politics. Marie worked over the years for Dr. Wayne Piper, and attorneys Robert Milne and Richard Lemargie. Marie and Lawrence owned and managed the Ephrata Speedway from 1971 to 1989. She was active in Epsilon Sigma Alpha for over 50 years participating in many service projects for the community. Marie was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Lady Elks.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Borck; sister Anna J. Berg of Seattle; daughter Gretchen Borck of Ritzville; son Phil Borck and wife Linda of Ephrata; and granddaughter Sara Tempel and her husband David, and grandson Andrew Borck. She is preceded in death by her daughter Susan Sperline; brothers Elsworth "Pete" Yarwood and Charles "Dutch" Yarwood; and sisters Mary Elizabeth Yarwood and Wilma "Billie" Baker.

Memorial services will be held at Nicoles Funeral Home in Ephrata at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005. Interment will follow at 4 p.m. at the cemetery in Harrington.
