MOSES LAKE — Volunteer firefighters will be cooking up some grub for their community this weekend, and raising money for their own training in the process.

The Moses Lake Fire Department Volunteer Firefighters Association is holding its 14th annual Fireman's Breakfast Saturday, with both volunteer and paid firefighters cooking up food from 5 a.m. to noon for patrons of the all-you-can-eat breakfast at the fire station at 701 E. Third Avenue. The event is in coordination with fire prevention month this October.

"It's just kind of a way for us to open up our fire station to the public," said Joel Hawes.

Hawes is president of the Moses Lake Volunteer Firefighters Association and said money raised from the breakfast and accompanying silent auction helps offset city costs for training and equipment for the department.

Hawes, a volunteer with the MLFD for the last three and a half years, said the event has been a success over the last 13 years. He said funds raised during last year's breakfast helped pay for a thermal imaging scanner for firefighters at the department and its dozen volunteers.

Food will be served up inside the department's apparatus bay garage, which normally houses MLFD equipment and trucks. Hawes said those trucks will be on display outside the building, for children of all ages to check out.

"We'll have some equipment on display," Hawes said, "so they can look at the fire trucks."

Cost for the Saturday breakfast will be $5 per person and $15 per family.
