Skates available for rent at recreation center

MOSES LAKE — Get your mittens and scarves out of mothballs, early brisk temperatures have gotten the ice freezing at the Larson Recreation Center.

The city's ice rink is scheduled to open earlier than normal this Saturday, as Moses Lake Parks and Recreation officials have seen weather dipping below normal temperatures.

"Because we have had some unseasonably cool weather, we have been able to open it a little bit earlier," said Moses Lake Recreation Superintendent Mark Hickock.

City workers were icing down the rink Wednesday, in hopes that weather will permit the Saturday opening. The rink is located next to the recreation center on Yakima Avenue, behind the Larson Playfield on West Broadway Avenue.

Ice skating is free and skates will be available to rent for $4 at the recreation center, and Hickock said ice skating lessons will also be available from Dec. 26-31.

In future years, skaters could be coming to an NHL-size hockey rink at the center, currently in the works at the City of Moses Lake.

This year the rink will be open each week from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Hickock said officials will play it by ear as to how long the facility will remain open.

"The weather has been cooperating so far," Hickock said, "we're just kind of hoping that it stays cold like this through the weekend."

Call the Larson Recreation Center at (509) 764-6306 for more information and to confirm the rink is open.
