Escaped convicts captured

Suspects flee police in stolen car after being located on Broadway

MOSES LAKE — Two escapees from a Tri-Cities correctional facility and a third suspect were apprehended by authorities Wednesday night after a short pursuit involving a stolen car.

The Moses Lake Police Department responded to a report of a stolen vehicle from Tacos El Rey on Broadway Avenue at about 10:20 p.m. MLPD officers soon located the car, which led them on a mile-long pursuit across the Alder Street fill before the suspects abandoned the car in a field behind the Ameri-Stay Hotel. The car's three occupants fled, but were soon apprehended by officers.

A 17-year-old boy and 19-year-old David W. Hatch had been escapees from Twin Rivers Correctional Facility in Richland. A third suspect, 20-year-old Helen M. Charging Whirlwind, was also taken into police custody.

The 17-year-old boy was booked into the Grant County Juvenile Detention Center for felony eluding, first-degree possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, minor in possession and driving with a suspended license.

Hatch was booked into the Grant County Jail for taking a motor vehicle without permission, obstructing a law enforcement officers and resisting arrest.

Charging Whirlwind was booked into the Grant County Jail for resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of taking a motor vehicle without permission.

All three were listed as transients by the MLPD. Prior to stealing the vehicle from Tacos El Rey, the MLPD said the three had ditched a separate stolen vehicle near the corner of Dogwood Street and Fourth Avenue. That vehicle had been reported stolen from Redmond.
