Lady Cougars crowned district champs

Warden played three games of softball Saturday to earn the district championship title.

In the first game, the Lady Cougars battled Goldendale and won 10-3 with Jennifer Kottong pitching a two-hitter. At the plate, Marce Villegas was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and a homerun, Amanda Martin was 2 for 2 with a triple and Jennifer Whitaker and Sierra Kisler were both 2 for 2.

In the second game against Royal, Ashton Stott led her team from the mound and helped to defeat Royal 18-8. The Lady Cougars made up for some poor defense at the plate with Jennifer Whitaker hitting 4 for 4, TJ Mora hitting 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs, Ceira Prueneda was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and Kat Martin hit 2 for 3.

The final game of the day was against Zillah, a team that had beaten Warden the last three years at districts. Warden defeated Zillah 8-6 with Jennifer Kottong throwing five strikeouts and hitting 2 for 3. Sierra Kisler hit 2 for 3 with a double and Jennifer Whitaker hit 2 for 4 with a triple.

Overall, Sierra Kisler hit 6 for 7 and Jennifer Whitaker was 8 for 11.

"It was a team effort. Everybody stepped up, especially at the plate. The seniors played the best they've played all season," said coach Wes Richins.

With the number one seeding for the state tournament, Warden will play Winlock at 2 p.m. Friday.

Lady Knights sneak into state with fourth seed

The Lady Knights played three games of softball and earned a fourth-seed to the state tournament to be played in Moses Lake beginning Friday.

In the first game Morgan Yearout threw to Natalie Toftdahl for a 22-0 win over Columbia-Burbank. Royal had ten hits and no errors in the game. Arlene Delgado was 2 for 4 at the plate, Ashley Goroski was 1 for 2 with a triple and Joelle Herrud was 2 for 3 with a triple and a single.

Royal lost the second game 8-18 against Warden. Yearout and Toftdahl teamed up again on the mound and behind the plate. Royal had seven hits and five errors. Mackenzie Brown was 1 for 3 from the plate with a double, Shaina Allred was 1 for 3 and Ashley Christensen was 1 for 1.

In Royal's third, and final game, of the day they narrowly defeated Riverview 8-6. Royal had seven hits and one error. Morgan Yearout started the game for Royal and was relieved by Stephanie Bartlett; Natalie Toftdahl started behind the plate for the Lady Knights and was replaced by Ashley Christensen.

There was to be a fourth game played but both teams opted to flip a coin instead, giving Royal their fourth place seeding.

Soccer

Warriors keep state championship bid alive

Wahluke traveled to Pullman Saturday to continue their run on state and defeated the Bulldogs 4-0.

The Warriors had 17 shots-on-goal compared to Pullman's five and Fernando Munoz had four saves for Wahluke.

All of Wahluke's goals came in the second half of play.

Aldo Zamora and Ernesto Rodriguez teamed up to score two of those goals. The first came in the 48th minute and the second in the 60th.

In the 56th minute Jose Mendez found the back of the net on a penalty kick.

Sigi Pulido, assisted by Daniel Barajas, had the last goal of the match at 66 minutes.

Tennis

ML duo advance to state tournament

The Moses Lake girls doubles team of Gabe Madson and Nikki Chambers earned a spot at the 4A state tennis tournament Saturday after finishing second at the regional tournament.

The duo lost to Eisenhower's Ciara Schultz and Katie Staudinger 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the championship match at Kissel Park in Yakima.

Track

Moore, Wafer headed to the state track meet

Aaron Wafer and David Moore earned spots at the state track meet after finishing in the top four in their respective events at the regional meet Saturday at University High School in Spokane.

Wafer ran an 11.16 in the 100-meter dash and a 22.41 in the 200. Moore finished second in the javelin with a throw of 183-0.
