| May 26, 2005 9:00 PM

Dorothy LaNelle Hay Riter was born January 17, 1916 in Boulder, Colo. to parents Glenn Lee Hay and Minnie Pearl Brown. She grew up near Boulder and Greeley with her siblings, Harold, Ralph, and LaVaughn Hay Ballou.

Mrs. Riter graduated from Campian Academy in Loveland Colorado. After her graduation, she enjoyed living in the mountains of Colorado and Wyoming.

On November 24, 1938, she married Ernest Eugene Riter. Mrs. Riter enjoyed an active life with her children, Ron and Joan.

The family suffered injuries in a 1944 automobile accident. The incident left Mrs. Riter with a permanent disability. Nevertheless, Mrs. Riter continued to be engaged in outdoor activities.

The family moved to Moses Lake, Washington in 1955. There, she raised her children and helped her husband with his electrical company. Mrs. Riter enjoyed being a homemaker and taking care of foster children. She also worked at Larson Air Force Base and for Dr. Richard Penhallurick in his dental office. While in Moses Lake, Mrs. Riter took pleasure in spending time with her friends.

Mrs. Riter was a life-long member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and highly valued her church family in Moses Lake. Despite her illness, she attended services regularly and kept in touch with fellow members of the church when she could not be present. Mrs. Riter loved to share her faith with others and was an active supporter of numerous charities and schools connected with her church. In keeping with this support of charities, Mrs. Riter has asked that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Project Patch, P.O. Box 450, Garden Valley, Idaho 83622.

After the death of her husband, Mrs. Riter moved to the Hearthstone Apartments, where she resided until the time of her death. While there, she developed many close friendships with fellow residents and staff which she greatly appreciated.

Mrs. Riter enjoyed spending time with her friends, family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, including Ron and Bev Riter of Everett; Joan Carman and her late husband, Ron Carman, of Walla Walla; Jeff and Jacquelyn Carman and their children, Treavor, Alex, and Sabrina, of Walla Walla; Marianne Riter Cursetjee and Zareer Cursetjee and their children, Hope and Faith, of Clackamas, Ore.; Andrew Carman of Cupertino, Calif.; Janelle Carman and John Glase of Walla Walla; Dianne Riter and Richard Hill of Everett; Richard Riter and Laura Bloomenrader Riter of Portland, Ore.; and her sister-in-law, Alma Riter, of College Place.

Mrs. Riter died at age 89 on Tuesday following a long illness, leaving a legacy of family and faith. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at the Moses Lake Adventist Church at 3 p.m.

Arrangements are in care of Kayser's Chapel & Crematory, Moses Lake.
