MOSES LAKE — This summer, fifth-grader Ben Shoemake will be doing something most kids his age don't often have a chance to do.

And it doesn't require leaving Moses Lake.

For five days, from June 20 through the 24, Shoemake will come to Discover Elementary at the Midway Learning Center for Camp Invention, where he will make his own inventions, problem solve and do hands-on experiments.

The camp, Shoemake said, is not like school, but interactive and fun and helps students strengthen skill sets that will be useful as an adult.

Camp Invention is a partnership project with the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office which began in 1990.

"It's hands-on, but it really emphasizes creativity and team work and inventive thinking skills," said Chris Hendricks, principal at Discover Elementary and director of this year's camp program.

"No pencils, no tests," Hendricks said of the program.

The camp will start every day at 9 a.m. and go until 3:30 p.m.

During that time, students will participate in four or five different activities, ranging from studying the habits of insects to creating their own movie scene, games and inventions from household appliances.

Kathryn Picanco, regional coordinator for Camp Invention, said the program hosted more than 40 students last year in the Moses Lake area and is a unique way to provide kids with social interaction in a challenging environment where they can learn new skills.

Ten $100 scholarships are also available for students interested in attending Camp Invention.

The cost is $199 on or before May 31, and includes the cost of the camp, snacks and a T-shirt.

A $20 discount is available through Camp Invention's Bring-A-Buddy program.

Positions are open for high school and parent counselors to help during the camp.
