The Lady Knights sweep doubleheader

ROYAL CITY — Two solid softball teams took the field to face each other on a blustery Tuesday and Royal came out on top.

The Lady Knights hosted the Lady Cougars of Warden in a doubleheader Tuesday and won both games 5-0 and 1-0 respectively.

In the first game, it looked like the Lady Knights would score early but with some trouble at the plate, they ended the first inning with two runners left on base.

The Lady Knights tallied one in the second and put together a small scoring run in the bottom of the fourth inning, adding another two. Kelse Shearer was belted home by a hit from Scroggins and Scroggins, in turn, was led in by catcher Angie Verhey.

After a small break in scoring, the Lady Knights came at the Lady Cougars again in the bottom of the sixth. Ash Goroski and Scroggins both crossed the plate. Those would be the last two runs of the first game.

There was only one run scored in the second game and it came from Mackenzie Brown, who started her run around the bags with a bunt single. She then stole second and advanced to third before scoring on a hit by Ashley Baker.

"Baker did a super job pitching and Scroggins had great games," said Royal coach Bill Barker after the game.

Warden coach Wes Richins had this to say about his team's effort, "Ashton Stott pitched a one hitter in a 1-0 loss; she played well." Richins went on to say that his squad played good defense but they needed a clutch play that never did come.
