Royal's Baker throws a perfect game

In Royal's double-header against Columbia-Burbank, Ashley Baker pitched five innings, facing 15 batters and striking out four.

Baker's leadership on the mound and the strong defense of her fellow teammates brought Royal a 10-0 win in the first game. The Lady Knights had nine hits and no errors to go along with their ten runs.

MacKenzie Brown hit 1 for 3 with a double, Ashley Goroski went 1 for 4 with a double and Angie Verhi hit 2 for 2.

"It is the first perfect game I have seen as a coach," said Bill Barker.

Royal's next game is against Warden on Tuesday.

Wahluke's hat trick

In a game to decide whether the Warriors would have home pitch advantage or not, Wahluke came up big.

Wahluke defeated Toppenish 3-1, with all three goals coming from Sigi Pulido.

The Warriors out shot their opponents 13-10 and secured their win in the second half.

Pulido's first score came with the help of Rogelio Guerrero but was answered by Toppenish in the 41st minute. Jose Avalos found Pulido in the 67th minute to score and Aldo Zamora assisted Pulido in the 72nd minute for the win.

"We started strong and finished stronger," said Coach Tony Langdon.

Tennis

Chiefs take five

Moses Lake boys tennis played seven matches of tennis against Walla Walla and won five.

Boys singles was a sweep with Robert Glaeser defeating Mike Bogard (6-2, 6-2), Patrick Anderson beating Matt Waring (6-4, 6-4), Ben Nye winning over Neal Parker (2-6, 6-0, 7-5) and Tony Holiday defeating Tyler Smith (6-2, 6-4).

The first boys doubles match was a win for Leary/Warner; they defeated Bergstrom/Jordan (6-2, 6-2). The other two boys doubles matches brought defeat for the Chiefs. McCaffery/Sawyer lost to Leier/VanDonge (3-6, 3-6) and Hansen/Johnson lost to McCauley/Simmons (3-6, 6-0, 3-6).

Track & Field

Moses Lake places three at Strandberg

The Chiefs traveled to Strandberg for their track meet on Saturday. David Moore took first in javelin 177-9. Kraig Grant took second in pole vault with a cleared height of 13 and Kelland Guerin placed eighth with a cleared height of 11.

Golf

Moses Lake holds eighth at Big Nine match

Finishing eighth didn't matter for Moses Lake head coach J.R. Cox, what did matter was his teams improvement to finish in front of Pasco, Kamiakin and Kennewick.

The Chiefs took eighth at the Big Nine match on Monday, scoring a 337 as a team, while Eastmont (305), Richland (315) and Walla Walla (316) rounded out the top three teams.

Moses Lake's Camron Whittle shot an 81 to lead Moses Lake, while Zach McDougall and Alex Semba shot an 83 each. Mike Holmes and Brad Earl both shot a 90 and Sean Hoiness finished with a 93 at Wenatchee Golf and Country Club.

Richland's Ash Miles medaled with a 72.

"We are starting to play a lot better," Cox said.

Softball

Big Bend softball splits the weekend

The Lady Viks traveled to Yakima Valley Community College on Friday to play a doubleheader. Big Bend swept the match up winning both games 10-1. BBCC earned their ten runs off 12 hits and had only one error in the first game. The winning pitcher was Martinez.

It was more of the same in the second game, with the Lady Viks earning ten runs off of 14 hits. McAlmond was the winning pitcher.

Saturday the Lady Viks were swept by Wenatchee Valley College 9-2 in the first game and 6-2 in the second. Big Bend got their two runs off of nine hits and committed two errors in the first game. The losing pitcher was Martinez.

In the second game, BBCC had two runs on nine hits with three errors. The losing pitcher was McAlmond.

To get a spot in the post season BBCC, whose current standing is fifth place, will have to sweep Spokane Community College on Saturday and Wenatchee Valley will have to be swept by Yakima Valley Community College.

Baseball

Vikings remain secure in fourth place

The Vikings were hosted by Wenatchee Valley on Saturday and were able to split the doubleheader.

In the first game, Wenatchee Valley was able to squeak out a 5-4 win over Big Bend. The Vikings' four runs came on four hits and two errors. The losing pitcher was Cooley.

The Viks were able to get the win in the second game, defeating Wenatchee Valley 6-4. The six runs put up by Big Bend came off of 12 runs. No errors were committed by the Viks in the second game. Hendrix was credited as the winning pitcher.

Big Bend currently sits in fourth place in the league. To maintain their standing, the Vikings will have to win three of the next four games they play. Those four games come by way to two doubleheaders. One with Columbia Basin on Wednesday and the other with Blue Mountain on Saturday.
