Royal sneaks into playoffs with loss

| May 9, 2005 9:00 PM

The Knights lost to East Valley 4-2 Saturday but have still qualified for the playoffs in the way bubble teams do. The two goals for Royal were scored by Silvano Ramos. His first goal, in the tenth minute, was unassisted and his second goal, in the 39th minute, was assisted by Raul Guerrero.

The game was to have been a must win for the Knights but with other teams in the league struggling Saturday, Royal received a berth.

Royal finished the regular season with a 5-5 record in league and a 9-7 record overall.

Their next match will be at Ephrata on Thursday. It is a loser out game. The winner will advance to the double-elimination districts match-ups.

More than just a loss for Othello

Othello went into Saturday's game against Connell in a tie for first in the league but came out of it with a fifth place finish. Connell won the match with a score of 3-1. Othello's lone goal was credited to Julio Cerna in the tenth minute but was also labeled an "own goal" due to the incidental contact of a Connell player.

Othello ends the season with a record of 7-3 in league.

Their birth into the playoffs is secured.

Othello will play away on Thursday.

Ephrata wins no contest with Bridgeport

Bridgeport was never given a chance Saturday against Ephrata, but when they had their lone shot on goal, it counted.

The Tigers exploded for 25 shots on goal against Bridgeport to win 12-1 on Saturday at Ephrata High School to end the regular season. Mark Farias had four goals for the Tigers while Frankie Navarro had three. Kai Hirz and Robert Farias had a couple and Bridgeport's Elder Hernandez had the only goal in the 56th in a losing effort.

Ephrata hosts Royal on Thursday in the first round loser-out CWAC district tournament.

Baseball

The Chiefs struggle at Kamiakin

Moses Lake played a double-header at Kamiakin Friday and came home without a win.

The Chiefs were shut out in the first game with a final score of 5-0. Kamiakin had five runs on eight hits.

In the second game, the Braves held Moses Lake to two runs on four hits in a 5-2 win to preserve the sweep. The Chiefs host Walla Walla on Tuesday at Larson Playfield.

Quincy sweeps, secures the second seed

Quincy needed to win out the rest of the regular season and Ephrata lose out to take the CWAC North league title. The Jacks did their job in a 15-4, 11-1 sweep over Chelan on Saturday, but couldn't get the opposite result from Ephrata, who won both of their games against Omak to secure the No. 1 seed and league title.
