Wenatchee, Walla Walla prove too deep

Wafer, Moore and Hernandez all finish first in their events

MOSES LAKE — Depth was Moses Lake's Achilles Heel at Thursday's track meet with Wenatchee and Walla Walla, but Nikki Weiland, head coach for the Chiefs, said that won't matter when it comes time for districts.

Moses Lake's David Moore, Aaron Wafer, Myriah Hernandez and the boys 4X100 relay each finished first during the meet at the Moses Lake High School, highlighting the Chiefs' home field stance against the Panthers and the Blue Devils.

Wenatchee outscored Moses Lake's girls team 122-21, while Walla Walla came out on top 126-21. For the boys, the Panthers edged the Chiefs 80-61 and Walla Walla ran away in a 103-42 win.

But that doesn't tell the story of what Moses Lake is capable of doing in the postseason, Weiland said.

"Other teams have the depth that we don't," Weiland said about Thursday's defeat. But put the Chiefs in a tournament situation and they become more of an impact player because of the talent they carry, Weiland added.

Wafer continued his strides at the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.31, distancing himself from Walla Walla's Steven Sullivan, who finished with an 11.56. Moses Lake's Ryan Carpenter came in third with a time of 11.75.

Carpenter and Wafer anchored the 4X100 boys relay that gave Moses Lake a first-place finish in a time of 44.08, but Wafer was absent for the 4X400 relay that fell to second with a time of 3:45.99, losing to Walla Walla, who finished with 3:37.59.

Carpenter also finished third for Moses Lake in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.78.

Moore led the field events with a throw of 168-feet, 11 inches in the javelin for Moses Lake, while Kraig Grant fell to second in the pole vault after failing to clear 13-6, along with Wenatchee's Ben Shea. Shea won the event after clearing 13-0 in less opportunities than Grant.

"I thought they did well," Weiland said of Moses Lake's boys team. "It doesn't look like it by looking at the team scores."

Weiland said Moses Lake's ability to "shine" will come at districts when finishing first will carry more weight than in the regular season.

"That is when they are really going to start shining," Weiland added.

Hernandez was the lone Chief to finish first for the girls with a throw of 102-1 in the javelin. She also finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 31-3 1/2.

Wenatchee took first place in 11 of the 18 events to score 122 points against Moses Lake and 84 against Walla Walla.

"The Wenatchee girls are one of the top in the state," Weiland said.

Josie Daschel and Ann Noyes finished the next best for the Chiefs after Hernandez. Daschel took fourth in the shot put with a mark of 29-4 and Noyes took fifth in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 17.72.
