Warden comes back against River View

The Lady Cougars softball team swept River View on Tuesday after coming back from a 6-0 deficit in the second game. In the first game, Jennifer Kotong pitched a one hit shut out in the first game, throwing nine strike-outs. Warden played solid defense in the first game and held River View to a no-score. The final in the first was 3-0 Warden.

In the second game the Lady Cougars found themselves down 6-0 but were able to score 10 unanswered runs to win the game 10-6. Tina Joy Mora had an RBI double and Kat Martin hit 2 for 2 with three runs scored. Ashton Stott had a great defensive play to stop a Riverview rally and seal the win for Warden.

"It was really a pitcher's duel," said Coach Wes Richins. Warden was able to take advantage of some walks and was aggressive in base running. The win takes Warden to 5-2 in league. Their next game is next Tuesday at Royal City.

Moses Lake splits with Eastmont

The Lady Chiefs shut out Eastmont in the first game with a final score of 3-0. Heather Coulter threw for the shut out with eight strike outs. Coulter also did well at the plate, hitting 2 for 4 with an RBI. Crystal Mabry went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a double at the plate. Bailey Milliken also hit well going 2 for 3 with a double.

"We played good defense," said Coach Allen Coulter of the first game.

The second game was scoreless after four innings and a late rally by Eastmont gave them the 3-2 win over Moses Lake. The Lady Chiefs went into the seventh inning with a one run lead but were unable to hold onto it. Eastmont had two runs in the seventh inning to win the game.

Crystal Mabry hit 2 for 4 with an RBI and Heather Coulter had an RBI as well.

"Our mistakes in the second game cost us the win. They [Eastmont] made some errors and we didn't capitalize on them," said Coach Coulter.

Moses Lake's next game is Friday at home. It is a double-header and senior night.

Lady Tigers defeat Cascade

Ephrata had nine hits and just two errors in their 4-2 win over Cascade on Tuesday. Laura Tinnelle pitched for the Lady Tigers with Eisen behind the plate. Tinnelle also hit 2 for 3 with an RBI. Other hitters for Ephrata were Tiffany Moncrief, who went 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI, and Tonya Joe, who hit 2 for 3 with one run scored. "It was a good game for tonight," said Coach Heather Wood.

The win takes Ephrata to 5-2 in league.

The Lady Tigers take on Omak next, in a double header.

Soccer

Othello defeats Kiona-Benton

Othello's match on Tuesday was a goal scoring clinic, leaving Kiona-Benton taking notes. Othello out shot KiBe 29-2 and finished the game with a score of 17-2. Othello's non-starters got a chance to play in the second half with the score standing at 10-0 at the half. Multiple goal scorers for the night were: Freddy Ramos with four and Juan Erado, Julio Cerna and Oscar Zayes all had two.

"You don't learn from these games," said Coach Bernie Garza. "Its nice to have fun and score when [they] could."

Tuesday's win takes Othello to 6-2 in league. Their next game is against Wahluke on Thursday.

The Knights defeat Toppenish in overtime

Royal City came away with a 2-1 victory over Toppenish on Tuesday. It was 0-0 at the half and tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. Toppenish struck first in the second half with a goal about four minutes in. In stoppage time the Knights' Juan Salas was able to find the back of the net with the help of Carlos Barajas. In the second minute of overtime Raul Geurrero put it away unassisted to end the game.

"We were able to pull together near the end of the game," said Coach Darren Christensen.

Royal's next game is a non-league game against Okanogan on Thursday.

Tennis

Moses Lake struggles against Wenatchee

The Lady Chiefs were able to muster just two wins against Wenatchee on Tuesday. Both of those wins came in girls singles. Gabe Madson defeated Nicole Barnhart (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) and Nikki Chambers beat Laura DeCamp (6-1, 6-3).

Other girls singles matches included: Charleen Johnson, who fell to Natasha Wood (1-6, 2-6), and Lexie Graham, who lost to Victoria Monreal (0-6, 2-6).

Moses Lake was swept in girls doubles with Baker/Kofoed falling to Fulkerson/Smith (1-6, 1-6), Stoker/Stevens being defeated by Murphy/Hewitt (0-6, 3-6) and Gessel/Karr losing to Valdez/Smith (3-6, 4-6).

Warriors nearly sweep Coyotes

Wahluke tennis had a great day on the court, winning nine of ten matches.

In boys singles, Alejandro Castano defeated Zach Scrimsher (6-2, 6-3). Columbia-Burbank's Nathan McGreevy won the second match by forfeit.

In boys doubles Andrade/Ortiz beat Kirklie/Henderson (7-5, 7-6 (7-4)). The other two doubles matches were forfeited by both squads.

In girls singles, Justine Gallacci defeated Paige Neuenshwander (6-2, 6-1) and Dalila Jimenez won by forfeit.

In girls doubles, Poch/Lopez beat Wilhelm/Manzik (4-6, 6-2, 6-2), Ornelas/Zabylski won over Perez/Hall (7-5, 6-2) and Diaz/Cochran won their match by forfeit.

Baseball

Two number one teams split

Warden and Columbia-Burbank went head-to-head Tuesday hoping to identify a true number one but the double header ended in a tie with Columbia-Burbank taking the first game 5-3 and Warden taking the second 4-0.

In the first game, Warden got their three runs on ten hits and two errors. Anthony Martinez started the day on the mound and was relieved by Rick Castio in the third. Edward Rodriguez was behind the plate for the Cougars.

Rodriguez had a good game at the plate, hitting 3 for 4 with two singles and a lead off homerun. Other hitters for Warden included Kenny Guerra, who hit 2 for 4 with a double and a single, and Andrew Garza, who went 2 for 3 with two singles.

"Rick Castio was very good on the mound," said Coach Jerry Powell.

In the second game Jorge Reyes pitched a two hit shut out and threw 12 strike outs and three walks in seven innings. Edward Rodriguez was the catcher and had a triple in the game.

"Reyes was commanding on the mound. His record is now 8-0," said Coach Powell. "Edward Rodriguez was strong behind the plate."

Warden's next game is against Royal on Friday.

Golf

Moses Lake girls have trouble on the fairway

The Lady Chiefs hosted Southridge and Pasco on Monday at Moses Pointe Golf Course. Southridge had the low team score of the day with a 389, Pasco came in second with a total of 421 and Moses Lake rounded out the trio with a 494. Pasco's Neddy Martinez had the low score of the day with an 83.

Moses Lake's low score was posted by Kelly Shannon, who shot a 118. Other scores for Moses Lake were: Tashauna Devine with a 121, Krystal Whitaker with a 124, Lindsey Martin with a 131 and Liz Tolmon with a 152.

Ephrata boys defeat Omak

The Tigers had a good day on the green and were able to defeat Omak 352 to 397 on Monday. Ephrata's Eric Lowe put up the low score of the day with an 83. Ephrata's other scores were: Drew Graves with an 88, Austin Key with a 90, Boone Valenta with a 91, Justin Scheib with a 92 and Dan Mickle with a 97.
