Alfred Jefferson Holmes

Alfred Jefferson Holmes, 85, a longtime resident of Moses Lake, passed on to his Lord on April 29, at Lakeridge Special Care Facility.

Born March 9, 1920 near Cotton Plant, Ark. to Harvey and Myrtle Holmes, he had two older sisters, Bertha and Pauline, an older brother Harvey and a younger brother William.

Alfred enlisted into the Army October 17, 1939 and received his Honorable Discharge December 1, 1944. His decorations include the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Purple Heart and the American Defense Service Medal.

He married Mildred Cossey June 28, 1944. They were divorced August 31, 1945, and remarried on December 31, 1945. He remained married to Mildred until March 7, 1947. Their daughter Margie Lou was born in 1944.

He married Gladys Marie Pratt on January 30, 1948 and remained married until his death. Their son, Doyle, was born October 3, 1961.

Alfred worked several jobs during his lifetime including, while in Moses Lake, at U&I Sugar Beet Plant and at Carnation-Nestle until his retirement in 1986.

Some of Alfred's activities included his love of hunting, fishing, gardening and doing yard work.

Survivors include his wife Gladys Marie Holmes of Moses Lake, daughter Margie Lou Holmes of Pompano Beach, Fla., son Doyle J. Holmes of Moses Lake and one granddaughter. He is also survived by his sisters.

A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 4 with Pastor Gene White officiating. Arrangements are in care of Kayser's Chapel and Crematory, Moses Lake.
