Ephrata's softball team needed a win against Quincy and Laura Tinnell gave them every reason to do so.

Tinnell near perfect against Quincy

The senior pitcher threw a shutout in game one, striking out six and allowing three hits as the Tigers topped Quincy 8-0 in the first game, followed by a 5 1/3 innings pitched in game two, striking out four and walking one as Ephrata finished the doubleheader sweep with a 11-3.

Tinnell also drove in two RBIs in the second game.

K.K. Bossert went 2-3 in the first game with a couple of RBIS, followed by a grand slam in the fifth inning of the second in the win.

Lady Knights struggle at home

Royal finished their day 1-2 in a tournament with Seattle Christian and Brewster Saturday.

In the first game, Royal had six runs on seven hits to defeat Seattle Christian by one point. Ashley Baker was the winning pitcher and she had Angie Verhi behind the plate to catch. Baker hit 2 for 3 with a triple and Arlene Delgado hit 1 for 1 with a double.

Royal lost the second game to Brewster 2-3. The Lady Knights had just two hits in the game. Baker and Verhi teamed up again for the second game and Kelsey Shearer hit 1 for 1 with a triple.

In their last game of the day, Royal lost to Seattle Christian 2-3. Royal had five hits and one error. Baker and Verhi worked in the infield again. Verhi hit 2 for 3 and Mackenzie Brown went 1 for 3 with a double.

Coach Bill Barker said Royal was not able to hit the ball and left runners on base in both their losses. Royal's next game is Friday against Columbia-Burbank in Pasco.

Tennis

Wahluke girls sweep Granger, boys win only one

The Lady Warriors of Wahluke swept Granger on the tennis court Saturday. In girls singles Justine Gallacci won a hard fought match against Karen Golob (6-7, 6-3, 6-4) and Dalila Jimenez easily defeated Bethany Carpenter (6-1, 6-1). The doubles team of Poch/Zabylski took the match against Pierce/Gregory (6-2, 6-2). Wahluke's other girls doubles teams of Ornelas/Jimenez and Diaz/Cochran won their matches by forfeit.

Wahluke's boys team struggled on Saturday, winning just one match. In boys singles, Granger won both matches by forfeit. The doubles team of Barajas/Castano were defeated by Alegria/Dodd (2-6, 3-6) and Stout/Ortiz fell to Paul/Mengarelli (0-6, 3-6). Wahluke's lone win came from the team of Andrade/Morgan who defeated Torres/Birrueta (6-3, 6-3).

Royal splits with Columbia-Burbank

The Knights lost the team match 3-2 but Guilhorme Almeida extended his undefeated streak to 12. In boys singles Almeida defeated Stefan DenBreejen (6-2, 6-1) and Andrew Dahlkey lost to Michael Shelton (6-4, 6-3). In boys doubles Meseberg/Bustillos lost to Rucker/Gordon (3-6, 3-6), Hebdon/DeLay beat Henderson/Scrimsher (6-1, 6-1) and Garcia/Ramos were defeated by Kirklie/McGreevy (3-6, 2-6).

The Lady Knights won 2-1. In girls singles Carly Jansen lost to Paige Neuenschwander (1-6, 1-6) and Kelcy Jansen defeated Angela Manzik (6-3, 6-1). In girls doubles Guijosa/Herrera defeated Perez/Hall (6-1, 6-0). Carly Jansen's loss was her first of the season.

Royal plays Zillah at home on Thursday.

Baseball

Royal defeats Granger with little trouble

The Knights' double header with Granger on Saturday was an easy win.

In the first game, Royal had 15 runs on 11 hits. AJ Eldridge hit 2 for 3 with three runs, three RBIs and a double. Ray Valle went 2 for 2 with two runs, three RBIs and one triple. Garrett Werlinger hit 2 for 2 with two runs and a double. Kyle Scroggins went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and a double and Josh Mathis hit 2 for 2 with two runs and a triple. Calvin Mathis, the winning pitcher, threw five strike-outs and was relieved by Eldridge in the fifth. After Eldridge on the mound, Valle came in to catch.

It was more of the same in the second game, with Royal defeating Granger 17-0. Royal's 17 runs came on 14 hits and zero errors. AJ Eldridge hit 2 for 4 with two runs, two RBIs and two doubles. Riley Christensen went 3 for 4 with three runs, three RBIs and a double. Ray Valle went a single shy of hitting the cycle, hitting 3 of 4 with three runs, two RBIs, a double, a triple and a homerun. Calvin Mathis hit 3 for 3 with five RBIs and two doubles and Zach Lewis went 1 for 1 with a double. The winning pitcher, Valle, was relieved by Scroggins in the fifth and the catcher, Eldridge was replaced by Brown in the fourth.

Saturday's win takes Royal 8-6 in league. Their next game is at Highland on Tuesday.

Moses Lake does well in league

Several of the Chiefs placed well in Thursday's league match against Kamiakin and Richland.

Out of a field of 15 teams, the Chiefs were able to muster a respectable fifth place finish on Saturday.

Navarro leads Ephrata over Chelan

Ephrata's Frankie Navarro led the pack on Saturday contributing three goals to his team's 6-1 victory over Chelan. Navarro's first goal came off of an Edgar Pichardo assist in the 10th minute. His next was assisted by Marco Farrias in the 38th minute. Navarro's final goal of the night was the last of the game in the 76th minute; he was assisted by Omar Pichardo. Ephrata's other three goals came from Marco Farias in the 16th minute off of a Mauro Chavez assist, Humberto Mendoza found the back of the net with the help of Mauro Chavez in the 50th minute and Kai Hirz scored off a Rafael Moreno assist in the 57th minute.

Chelan's lone goal came in the 12th minute when Seth Manthey found the back of the net.

Ephrata's keepers, Matt Barr and Dan Landeck, had three saves each.

The win on Saturday takes Ephrata to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in league.

Their next match is Tuesday at Cascade.
