Nearly $1,000 in damage closes park after two weeks

MOSES LAKE — The gates to the city's newly-opened Japanese Garden are now locked, following a vandalism incident at the park Sunday night.

According to the Moses Lake Police Department, $1,000 in plants and the bamboo gazebo at the garden were reported damaged Monday. Unknown subjects also wrote in the Zen garden sand.

A sign on the front bamboo gate to the garden now states that the garden is closed due to the vandalism. The garden was built with installed security cameras, and police reports indicate that subjects were caught on video.

The park opened its gates Memorial Day weekend, and a grand opening has been scheduled for August when representatives from Moses Lake's sister city of Yonezawa come to town.

Moses Lake Parks and Rec Director Spencer Grigg said the park would be closed for a few days while the city replaces the plants.
