Basin girls soccer teams prevail

YAKIMA — Four girls soccer teams from the Columbia Basin excelled at the Yakima Mid-Summer Classic soccer tournament June 24-26.

The Extreme, an under-12 team, took the first championship of the four teams Sunday afternoon, defeating a Bothell select team 2-0. Vanessa McDonald of Othello scored in the first half on a penalty kick. Rebecca Byam of Moses Lake and Taylor Edson of Warden anchored the defense. The Extreme secured shutouts in four of the five games they played during the tournament.

The CB United '92 team took home the title in the under-13 division by defeating the Yakima Wildcats 3-0. Aimee McMillan of Ephrata and Lindsay Garza from Othello keyed the team's offense, while Ashley Donaldson of Moses Lake and Christine Kirkwood of Othello ensured a solid defense. The team outscored its preliminary round opponents 18-1.

In the under-11 division, the CB United '94 outscored their opponents 23-4 in their first four matches. They faced a team from Yakima in the championship game and came away with second place. Earning defensive accolades were Ephrata's Kayla Brissey and Quincy's Cheyenne Hyer. Machaela Roberts of Wenatchee and Moses Lake's Keilye Garcia and Astride Ham led the offense.

The CB United '95 team played a jamboree format in the under-10 division. They won all three of their matches and outscored opponents 15-1. Fredalyn Ham of Moses Lake and Kendall Sage of Ephrata were the team's top scorers. Lana Sween of Ephrata and Moses Lake's Skylar Kimbro and Dani Crawford earned praise for their defense.
