ML topples Kennewick and Walla Walla in final two duals of the season

MOSES LAKE — It wasn't your typical finish to a season that started out with a loss.

The Moses Lake wrestling team utilized its final two Big Nine duals to polish off some techniques before the district tournament two weeks away. While doing it, the Chiefs produced a 48-27 win over Kennewick and a 63-13 win over Walla Walla.

"At this point, everything we do has to be getting ready for the postseason," said Nathan Stanley, head coach for Moses Lake. "It has been the same story the last couple weeks — we aren't 100 percent in our lineup, but we will be next week."

With next week being subdistricts, Stanley said Moses Lake has a chance to qualify seven or more wrestlers for the district tournament.

Against Kennewick and Walla Walla, Stanley said it gave him a chance to see what he has coming next week.

"We got a good look at a couple of younger guys who will be going to prove themselves at subdistricts," Stanley said.

Stanley said John Fackrell (171) proved Moses Lake's readiness for the district tournament in the opening match against Walla Walla.

Fackrell trailed Seth Small 5-1 after the first period, battled for a 7-5 lead after the second and held on for a 7-6 final.

"John did an excellent job keeping a two-point lead and held on for the win," Stanley said.

Following Fackrell, Stevie Vasquez (189) pulled off a pin to start the second period after trailing Walla Walla's Jeremy Daggett 8-2.

Moses Lake's Brett Frederickson (215) pinned Greg Dixon midway through the second period to give the Chiefs a 15-0 lead through the first three wrestlers in the dual.

After a scoreless first period at 275 pounds, Walla Walla's Juan Rodriguez pinned Warren Jones in the second period to put the first Blue Devil points on the scoreboard. John Silva scored a second round pin at 103 pounds for Moses Lake and the Chiefs were awarded a forfeit at 112 pounds.

Anthony Vela (119) continued the pins for Moses Lake with a 2:40 fall over Walla Walla's Alayo DeLarosa.

Gabe Guzman (125) was one of the wrestler's Stanley was looking at for the subdistrict tournament.

Facing Walla Walla's Sam Richards, Guzman gave up an early takedown then never looked back. Guzman scored a reverse following the takedown, then worked his way for a two-point nearfall, ending the first period with a 4-2 lead.

In the second, Guzman scored an escape, followed with a takedown and two nearfalls for a 12-2 lead after the second period. In the third, Guzman finished Richards off with a pin 50 seconds into the period.

Sean Hoiness (130) picked up a late third period pin over Walla Walla's Bobby Radke after building a 13-3 lead. Cody Hoiness (135) picked up a first period pin over the Blue Devils' Chris Roff, while Trevor Cole (140) fell to Walla Walla's Jordan Stepleton in a 17-4 loss.

Thomas Courtright (145) pinned Caleb Rude 31 seconds into the second period, Ty Payne (152) fell to Jacob Butenhoff in a 3-1 decision and A.J. Hara (160) scored a pin in the first period over Walla Walla's Josh Busby to finish the match at 63-13 in favor of the Chiefs.

"The kids are still improving and learning as the season goes on," Stanley said. "If we keep going that way, we are going to finish well."
