Chiefs winning streak ends
Pasco scores 22 points off turnovers to slow Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE - Quinn Bakers 19 points wasn't enough.
Neither was Mitch Roylance's 13 as the Moses Lake boys basketball team fell to Pasco 70-57, ending a four-game winning streak for the Chiefs. Meanwhile, Dean Colbray led the Bulldogs with 22 points in the win.
"I think we were a little lax after the break and it looked like we didn't have our edge tonight," said Moses Lake head coach Brant Mayo.
Mayo added that the loss was "a missed opportunity" for the Chiefs who put together two runs in the second half to cut Pasco's lead to 43-42 with 3:09 left in the third quarter.
Roylance hit two of his three 3-pointers in the third to make it a one-point game, but a Moses Lake turnover following a Pasco timeout led to a 9-2 Bulldog run. Pasco forced only 15 turnovers in the game, but capitalized by scoring 22 points off the Chiefs' mistakes.
"We would get close and then we would lose the ball and it was back to six or eight point (deficit)," Mayo said.
Pasco jumped out early on the Chiefs, running up a 20-13 score after the first quarter. Starting the second, the Bulldogs built its first double-digit lead of the game after Jerome Houf hit consecutive free-throws to give Pasco a 24-13 lead with 7:31 left in the quarter.
Following a Houf 3-pointer from the top of the key, Moses Lake went on a 10-4 run to force the Bulldogs into a timeout trailing 31-23 with 3:05 left in the half.
Brendan Ware scored six points in the final three minutes of the second quarter to cut Pasco's lead to 33-31 at halftime.
Houf followed the break with another 3-pointer, part of a 7-0 run to start the third quarter. Baker started to control the post for Moses Lake, weaving through Pasco defenders for five points in the third, but Roylance's two 3's in the quarter put Moses Lake down 43-42 with 3:09 left in the third.
Starting the fourth, Baker continued to slide to the basket to score six more points for the quarter.
"He has a good knack to get to the rim and the foul line," Mayo said. "In the fourth quarter they took him away and clogged the lane."
Moses Lake cut Pasco's lead to 56-50 with 4:41 left in the fourth on two free throws from Baker, but Pasco pulled away and sealed the game on a 14-7 run.
The Chiefs were held to 32.1 percent shooting in the second half by the Bulldogs who shot 52.2 percent in the final 16 minutes of play.
"We didn't execute at times and it seemed like we were out of sync at times and this was a missed opportunity for us," Mayo added. "We had one or two kids play OK and then nothing after that."
