Soap Lake wins in double overtime

SOAP LAKE — Rylei Franks was fouled with six seconds left on the clock in the second overtime period between Soap Lake and Pateros Monday.

"We won," said head coach Eric Neilsen. "It wasn't pretty but winning is winning even when it's ugly."

Both teams struggled from the line in overtime, shooting a combined 0 for 7 in the first overtime period.

Franks stepped to the line and missed his first shot as a groan rang out amongst the crowd.

Franks zeroed in and made his second shot to put Soap Lake ahead 67-66 for the win.

The game did not begin with the same momentum that it ended.

In the first quarter the Eagles slid to an 11-4 deficit against Pateros.

Soap Lake put together a 10-0 run to pull within three and maintained the 3-point margin as the first quarter expired.

The Eagles continued to battle and trimmed Pateros' lead to one with five minutes left in the half.

The Billy Goats pulled away from Soap Lake again, stretching the lead to 32-21 with under two minutes left in the half.

Soap Lake had two back-to-back turnovers and ended the half down 35-23.

Pateros came out shooting in the third quarter and was able to maintain a 13-point lead, despite Soap Lake shooting well from the field.

Micah LePlante made a jump shot for Soap Lake to jump start their offense in the third.

LePlante continued to produce for the Eagles and helped his team pull within eight as the third quarter ended.

Pateros battled to keep their lead but it continued to dwindle as Soap Lake gained momentum.

Adrian Guzman sunk a three to make it 59-56 and bring the Eagles within striking distance.

Brad Hitzroth hit a three to tie the game at 59 with just under two minutes to go.

Pateros tried to hold out for the last shot of the game but was unable to score.

In the first overtime, Pateros struck first and made it 63-59 before Soap Lake scored.

LePlante scored the tying bucket for Soap Lake to take the game to the second overtime.
